Is it not drivers that need a wake up call…?
If you’re driving while impaired, your licence should be revoked and not suspended.
People might think twice if they had to sit a theory test and driving test once their ban is up.
Judges need to stop listening to sob stories and bullshit character references. Nobody cares if you need your license to go to work, you hurt/killed someone. Motorists are out of control at the moment. Everyone texting at the wheel, some of them watching fucking TELEVISION while driving (I’ve seen this twice now).
This can’t be blamed on the government. Every driver needs to take individual responsibility. We’ve way too many cowboys on the road.
Since moving home I’ve been flabbergasted by the amount of drivers I see with their phones up to their ears, maniacs up other cars arses on country roads, lads overtaking at any chance because they seem to think it’s a race….like, really aggressive driving.
As drivers , the country needs to cop on.
Do we need to have warnings that speed cameras operate in an area? To me, this should be removed so drivers are on edge all the time.
Judges do need to get tougher.
Question: if someone is taken off the road, when they are eligible to drive again do they have to take their driving test again? (I assume so. If not, then they should have to)
We’re above average in road safety compared to other EU nations. Is there room for improvement, of course. However, let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture.
Lucky for us that we have such a fantastic Minister for Justice!
Mobile phone use while driving is epidemic and there is nothing being done and you cannot tell me it isn’t a factor in a significant number of accidents, they will lower speed limits but it will do absolutely nothing. Put guards on foot out on the road at junctions in rush hour, if the walk along side of cars it will be like shooting fish in a barrel, €250 on the spot fine if using a phone, I know using the phone while going slow in traffic isn’t the cause of road deaths but the same idiots who cannot put their phone down for 2 minutes in traffic are the same idiot using them all the time. Zero tolerance is the only way to get ahead of this issue that is only getting worse.
The technology to stop people from speeding and driving recklessly is there. We just need to implement it and bring in heftier fines to finance it. I feel like the problem is that no government wants to bring it in because of how unpopular it would be.
The EDT and testing system needs a complete revamp. 12 lessons going round test routes is not teaching anybody how to drive its teaching them how to pass a test.
We also need to look at the speed limits, plenty of good stretches of motorway that could go up to 130 and many sections on primary routes could go to 110 and saying that there are plenty of routes that should be lowered.
Really need more speed cameras, more cops and heaftier penalties for those caught breaking the rules of the road.
My Partner has tried to report 4 serious incidents of dangerous driving to 4 different Gardai Station and each time they have binned the report and done nothing about it, depsite him having it on video, and faced no repercussion after a GSOC investigation.
Its policy for Gardai to refuse to log road traffic complaint, and he even tried reaching out to a few journalists thinking Gardai refusing to take report and log it to pulse system might be a story but was ignored by every single one of them
There’s a clear solution to this…DONT FUCKING DO IT YA CUNT. Personal responsibility plays such a massive part and yet most ppl start the conversation with the police or judiciary. Not a criticism OP I hear what you’re saying.

Time to wake up and realise that its warzone on the streets and many might think this affects only motorcycle owners. Its only question of time when these rampant gangs will leave kids without parents or parents without kids.

Driving etiquette in this country is generally very good by EU standards. We have very low levels of road deaths. Try driving in Greece, Romania or the US and you’ll constantly see dangerous driving that’s considered rare in Ireland.
Make one High-density city with railways as the only way to get around. The car is the problem.
Irish politicans ain’t got the courage to do anything that would impact driving. Shane Ross brought in that learners drivers needed to be accompanied and michael Collins practically swore to kill him. Cameras should be all over the place. License , insurance and tax info registered to license plate. All Gardai cars have the ability to read plates.

I always think it’s very odd that we’ve banned phones in cars, and have installed big, fuck off touch screen displays in them instead.

A lot of the time I’m relieved I’m in a larger vehicle that could take a knock from these dickheads in cars on the road today.
Minister will be on the news with some spanners standing each side of him looking grave and nodding their heads. More penalty points, camera ect when research shows that’s shit, what changes people’s behaviour is the sight of garda cars on our roads.

Like them or hate them they’ve had a fairly solid policy on road fatalities for the past 20 years and deaths have dropped to some of the lowest road deaths per capita in the EU and well. To put it into context at least 400 people died every year from 2001 back to since records were maintained excluding 87. The stop during COVID should almost be excluded from the data as so many weren’t driving.
If there’s anyone to blame it’s Cyclists with no sense of self survival thinking it’s smart to undertake a truck. Car drivers who drink and can’t stay with a speed limit.
I follow a few cyclists advocates and it’s sick and tiring listening claim they were cycling safely as they were in and out of buses and other cars. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.
10% of your yearly income as a fine for most offences. Prison for cases of serious harm or death.
Ridiculously lenient sentences (for every crime here) isn’t a deterrent.

Would also be curious to see how many pedestrians who are hit by cars at night are wearing High Visibility clothes. There are some ridiculously stupid people out there walking off footpaths without any regard for drivers

I primarily cycle, have a car for family stuff. Love the bus. Wish I lived near a luas or dart.
