      Once this passes and the public immediately stops caring because the Internet hysteria dies, it’ll make a gear case for the expanded hate speech laws that have been worked on.

      If you’re upset about being punished for a hate crime, don’t commit hate crimes.

      Freedom of speech is not affected, you just face harsher consequences for being racist, homophobic or transphobic publicly.

      That’s a good thing.

      People who are against the hate speech law. Can any of you give examples of things you or anyone else may say that would cause them to break that law or get a conviction?

      Cool. Build a new prison and recruit more Gardaí please. Although I think is all she’s really capable of unfortunately.

      Is there any legal TLDR?

      Do these laws just punish people for existing laws but enhance the punishment if it’s motivated by hatred?

      Or is their new laws for speech? i.e if I called someone a racial slur, is that in itself now punishable without any other factors?

       Other than online, I’ve never heard anyone discuss this legislation. Maybe I’m in a bit of a bubble, but it didn’t even come up as an issue people cared about during the general election – and at the time, I was having conversations about politics nearly every day. It makes me wonder if too much weight is being given to the voices opposing this, especially since it seems to have caught the attention of foreign commentators online who don’t fully understand how Irish law works.

      Higher jail terms for crimes motivated by hatred. So what prisons are they going to put them in since there all full? It won’t be enforced

      Not saying I agree with it or disagree with it. However, I think there are much more important issues at present to be dealt with e.g. Our capital city being an absolute hell-hole for one, our prisons being full to the brim so much so that suspended sentences are being handed out like smarties by the judiciary, sheer wanton lawlessness on the roads. Read the room, Minister.

      Surely people against this law are people who have some innate fear of being on the wrong side it at some point?

      All that means is you need to check yourself and why you think this will affect you.
      It’s fairly simple; don’t openly harm someone based on race, gender, sexuality etc, and you’ll be fine?….

      Bunch of armchair-lawyer bullies out here I swear.

      I’m fine with that, even though there’s not enough Garda to deal with that or prison space to use it. Also, I need to see this in action. American forums (this one for example) have “funny” exceptions.

      I need clarification,

      Can I call another White person a prick if they’re being one and not be charged with a hate crime?

      Can I call a Black/Brown/Asian person a prick if they’re being one and it not be considered a hate crime, or will I end up being charged with a hate crime?

      How far will this law go to affect how we communicate with each other?

      Can we now not call out someone for being an Asshole, Prick, General not nice person?

      Seems very dystopian to me, I’m all for shutting out bigots, but there shouldn’t be a wholesale restriction on what people can say, obviously excluding the blatant racist/homophobic remarks that the bigots will spout.

      McEntee to me, seems like a tyrant, she seems to be focusing on silencing people and imposing strict rules and regulations, but doesn’t actually want to tackle the issues of rampant Crime, Immigration loopholes and a lackadaisical Judicial system that seems to embolden scumbags to keep repeating offences with just a slap on the wrist,

      We are living in very strange times and definitely teetering on a very thin line between heading down a 1984 esque route with Censorship and Nanny states.

      this is perfectly fine and idk why people are mad? maybe people are mixing up hate crime and hate speech. No one said anything about the latter. It’s not hard to not assault people.

      Anyways this will only be useful if they actually build prisons to put the offenders… otherwise it’s just de-facto legal like every other crime
