This tantrum fits the Russian mindset *perfectly*. When you punish the politician/czar, the politician/czar offloads the punishment to civilians or his subjects.
Fico is just doing his part as Putin’s favorite Slavic footstool in the EU (Putin’s absolute favorite footstool in the EU is the one in Budapest. It goes by the name of Orbán or something like that).
It reminds me of happened after the West had imposed a few sanctions in 2014 on Putin and the siloviki after the Russians had goose-stepped their way into Crimea for the second time. Putin then signed off on bans against the imports of raw materials. and fruits and vegetables from the EU [to “ensure the security of the Russian Federation”](https://food.ec.europa.eu/horizontal-topics/international-affairs/eu-russia-sps-issues/russian-import-ban-eu-products_en) or some such.
Of course, ordinary Russians bore the brunt of this policy most keenly with their own government arbitrarily cutting off the supply of perfectly edible produce and foodstuffs whose import had been just fine before February 2014. Meanwhile, farmers in the EU who used to export their produce to Russia got partially bailed out and it ended up being redistributed throughout the EU. I remember this distinctly because even on my second-class IC train rides through Poland that year everyone got a Polish-grown apple or two as a free snack (better than a tiny package of crackers).
Slovakia forgives to say they have nothing left to give in aid. Almost all they could spare has been given. So not a big loss for Ukraine
I’m sure he can just as passionately explain to his citizens why the Government hasn’t gone all in to diversify their energy supply in 2.5 years while getting gas piped in through a country that is being attacked by a producing country.
