      I don’t think we have enough strategic importance to be dominated by Russian bots. I genuinely believe that’s why our far right gets so few votes.

      I’d definitely say there’s a fair few lurking about not just here but on other ireland related sub-reddits. Russia has been running massive bot farms and such for years now they’re basically everywhere if you know what to look for. I think we’re better than most subs but they’re practically omnipresent at this point and tmk can’t really be stopped with the moderation tools of reddit. The russian government are bad faith actors all the way down, if they can weaponise it they will and they’re not the only ones.

      I doubt it, we’re not really strategically important or useful for destabilising anywhere; we’re non nato so they’d probably just nuke us for playing all sides to make an example, if anything

      Definitely.

      There’s here’s been multiple accusations of Oireachtas personnel being involved in espionage, the Government specifically blocked the expansion of the Russian embassy and then diplomats were expelled on multiple occasions, we are members of the EU, Gardaí have warned that Russia is trying to steal intellectual property from Irish companies and multinationals here, Yantar spy ship being escorted away by the Naval Service last month etc. Online influence seems like it would form a part of an overall strategy.

      One of the draws of Reddit is also a pretty big flaw when it comes to giant subs (worldnews anyone?). Is it right to leave the moderation of subs with millions and millions of users to volunteers who are, dare I say, unvetted? I don’t know how Reddit head office works, but it’s pretty clear that they’re not prepared or preparing against disinformation campaigns. Or they just don’t care.

      For every Russia account there’s 15 china accounts backing them up and brigading on each others behalf

      Yes and I’d say it’s even worse on Twitter. Accounts with the Irish flag or an Irish name saying the weirdest shit
