For some people maybe not getting the point of a more than 10 hour train ride between Tallinn and Vilnius, this clearly isn’t the intended goal of the service. Rather it is to support cross-border train travel which has always been lagging between the Baltics (that was quite intentionally designed so by both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union).
Tallinn-Vilnius will still mainly be served by flights or maybe by the bus service. Tallinn-Riga is mostly served by fast and comfortable buses too and will soon have the Rail Baltic direct train service. But this interconnection project allows people to travel more comfortably by train between say Tartu and Riga or Tallinn and Northern Latvia or Riga and Eastern Estonia.
Important step in their close relationship.
When will it be connect to Warsaw?
> until today the Baltic capitals had no train connection.
They have? Though yes they only started up in the last few years.
Each of the legs already existed individually. There aren’t any new routes being added here today. What has changed is the timetables are now much better coordinated for long distance through journeys. Particularly at Valga in the past a wait of several hours was previously required make it an impractical long distance transport option.
Don’t want to undermine it, it’s great and about time! And the individual legs have already proved to be popular. Hopefully this helps encourage people to make more longer distance through journeys and help encourage people to rail before Rail Baltics opens.
Does any of the 3 Baltic rail companies still have broad gauge sleeper carriages at their disposal, with locomotives?
Until March 2020. ( start of covid) there were regular night trains between Baltic capitals and Russia ( even to Kyiv trough Belarus. Would a sleeper be more convenient option for a travel between Talinn and Vilnus .
So it is actually three trains with ample time for transfer. Do you need three separate tickets?
Latvia finally got enough money🔥
