Oh sweet god, Just pay a fucking patrol to monitor the canal at least this way people can still enjoy the canal and it’s kept clear of unwanted campers.

It looks more permanent this time. They have the 50kg weights on every barrier. They have also blocked all paths so you can’t access past the bike path.

Waterways Ireland had said they would develop a more permanent solution than the fences, I wonder if this is a prelude to that. Presumably, they’ll be using more dense trees, plants and flowers instead of having grassed areas, in order to discourage camping. But those do look very permanent, so maybe that’s overly optimistic.

I saw them placing down the yellow stump things this morning (they weren’t in a line along the edge) and I thought they were it was sort of “hostile architecture” to stop them pitching tents. Was thinking it’s a bit shit but much less of an eyesore than the fences. Fuck sake.

So, for someone that doesn’t know, what was the actual problem in that area? Why did they fence it off?

Government pays charity.
Charity buys tents and gives them to homeless.
Government pays to take tents off homeless and destroys them.
Government pays to erect fencing.
…6 months later.
Government pays to remove fencing.
Government pays charity….
Etc etc
