Mio nonno scattò questa foto nel 1964 e sono riuscito a trovare il luogo con una ricerca inversa delle immagini su Google. Apparentemente questa torre sorvegliava la traversata dei traghetti fino alla costruzione del primo ponte nel 1794.
Il ponte è stato chiaramente notevolmente ampliato (e apparentemente anche allungato) dal 1965. Tuttavia, ciò che mi ha sorpreso di più è stato il modo in cui la collina rocciosa di fronte alla torre è stata livellata per far posto alla strada a quattro corsie.

The area behind your grandad was also excavated to facilitate the road, I think there was a big issue at the time too where there was a landslide as they cut too steeply into the soil/rock
The Southern piers for the old bridge are still visible now. It was actually completely West of the current bridge, which was built alongside the old bridge before it was demolished.
