A near-$600 million stake in Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) was sold by a major European institutional investor last year in large part due to boss Elon Musk’s disputed bonus package.

ABP, Europe’s largest pension fund, sold its entire stake of 2.8 million shares in the third quarter of the year, local financial newspaper Financieele Dagblad reported at the weekend. The shares were worth €571 million ($584 million).

A spokesperson for Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP, which is the pension fund for approximately three million Dutch civil servants, said there was “a problem” with the €56 billion pay package, adding that the fund’s decision reflected consideration around responsible investment requirements, as well as costs and financial return.

The fund had voted against Musk’s “exceptionally high” package at the electric vehicle company’s AGM in June and Financieele Dagblad noted that poor working conditions at the company were also among the reasons the Tesla stake was sold.

Musk’s pay package was again blocked last month by a US judge but has been backed by the company’s shareholders.

Since Musk forged ties with US President-elect Donald Trump in recent months and the Tesla boss’s attempts at meddling in North American and European politics, a number of Dutch companies and private individuals are experiencing “Tesla shame” and questioning ownership of the company’s cars, the newspaper also said.

    2. Until recently, I used to really despise Musk. I thought he was just another boring libtard environmentalist, like a less feminine version of Greta Thunberg. But lately, he’s been making some really good points. I hope his ideological conversion is sincere.

We currently have two Teslas in our household and we just had a discussion with my wife about not buying any more new Teslas as long as Musk is in charge.

Musk is the main reason I wouldn’t consider buying a Tesla if I wanted to buy a car.

Well, Tesla is a publicly listed company so you don’t just buy from Musk, but also other investors. Would have been worse if he was the sole investor, which he is not (same is applicable with Space X and other businesses where he owns shares).

Moreover, I think that, since Tesla has a massive GigaFactory in Germany, there is sufficient interest to make the business work and just sanction Elon Musk directly, and not Tesla.

Personally, I hate Musk. He is an anti-immigrant immigrant, who is a control freak and has a childish attitude towards life. While he had quite a vision with his brands, he is also the one who is now damaging to them and should step aside. Also, he should have no place in meddling with other countries’ politics and should be instantly sanctioned (which will most likely happen if CDU wins in Germany).

    6. I believe they lost a lot of money on that trade. The Tesla stock went up considerably after Trump’s win. Also, there is nothing wrong with Musk’s pay package. It is agreed beforehand so quite shocking that once he has achieved his end of the bargain, a judge will come in and void the agreement on some arcane rules.

I own a Tesla in the UK. My next car will be electric. Zero chance it will be a Tesla because of Musk.

I don’t want anything to do with funding Trump, Farage, the AfD, and who knows what next.

In fact, I actively wish (and I will do my little part) Tesla (and therefore Musk) goes bankrupt ASAP.

They are a good 80-90% overvalued, so it’s highly likely it will happen if sales growth continues to remain negative (as it has already been in 2024). All meme stocks come crashing down eventually. Gravity wins 100% of the time.

    8. Musk is a dangerous idiot. There’s little doubt about that but Tesla’s outlook is not only bad because of that. Tesla had an early movers advantage, but other car manufacturers have caught up, especially the Chinese ones like BYD. Tesla itself also hasn’t presented any new models aside from the Cybertruck in ages. And the Cybertruck won’t ever be allowed in Europe (and some other markets).

We should set up a major boycott of Musk’s products, and especially Tesla. We should stop buying Tesla’s, and ask our companies to stop offering them as company cars. We should quit X. Most of his wealth, from which he gets his power, is based on Tesla’s stock price. If sales drop strongly in Europe, this will affect the stock price, and thus hit Musk financially. He is too far down the rabbit hole to stop making noise now, but this will at least show him he can’t mess with our democracies without consequences.

    10. I have a Tesla since 2021 and I’m embarrassed to drive it nowadays.

If only an ID Buzz GTX w/ options wasn’t 85.000 € … I’m stuck with the fascist-wagon, for now.

I don’t even understand what kind of idiots in Europe would buy a Tesla. Its logo is like a swastika these days. You really don’t want to ride around in that.
