Of course they do, in addition to Ukraine’s resources. They’re fighting a damn war to get it. Stop Russia, now, by force. Help the only force actively fighting to defend Ukraine and to stop Putin’s expanding criminal empire! [https://u24.gov.ua/](https://u24.gov.ua/)

    2. gcerullo on

They already had that but tried to take more. Now they should get nothing in addition to their ruined economy and the arrest of Putin for war crimes.

    3. Clapeyron1776 on

It sounds a lot like the Russians are asking Ukraine to agree to being unable to defend themselves or reclaim any lost territory in the future. Why would they agree to that?

These arrogant demands are very much in line with what the plurality (if not majority) of the oh-so “poor”, “oppressed” and “misunderstood” Ordinary Russian Citizens™ have wanted.

*Since 2022, about half of Russians have consistently supported peace negotiations. But even those respondents embracing peace talks support them only with the condition that Russia retains its recent territorial gains in Ukraine. They are unwilling to accept Russia’s strategic defeat. In recent months, some pollsters have noticed a slight increase of 7–8 percentage points more people in support of peace talks. Some believe this trend might indicate war fatigue spreading within Russian society. However, the pattern is not consistent across various studies.*

It’s not something restricted to Putin and his inner circle. Consistently imposing or assuming a meaningful intellectual division between the Russian ruling class and its subjects is inexcusably misguided and ignorant. It’s related to how Russians have been able to get away with literal (and open) murder for generations despite Westerners’ repeatedly misguided attempts to accommodate, forgive or even excuse the Russians.

*While many Russians have access to true information about what happens in Ukraine, they often choose to avoid facts that challenge their propaganda-crafted preexisting beliefs. Even when such information was offered by their blood relatives, Russians commonly denied and refused to believe the facts, claiming that this evidence was fake. This is likely explained by Russians trying to avoid cognitive dissonance, the mental discomfort people experience when encountering facts challenging their preexisting beliefs. Conversely, many Russians are used to experiencing good feelings when Russia invades other countries. For most of the post-Soviet period, the Kremlin has waged wars of varying intensity, and periodic rallying around the flag has often triggered the sense of belonging to a great country. Indeed, the narratives the Kremlin promoted at the outset of its wars repeatedly boosted the perceptions of collective unity and allowed many Russians to derive their sense of worth from belonging to a large and strong state. For example, in the post-Crimea period, polls recorded that respondents’ own self-respect spiked from 27 percent in July 2012 to 45 percent in August 2014. Why learn the unpleasant truth when propaganda offers a much more satisfying, glorious, and convenient version of reality?*

Like Putin and the rest of the siloviki, more than enough ordinary Russians expect to see this war to the bitter end at the Ukrainians’ expense and on terms favorable to Russia overall. This outcome is consistent with their sinister self-imagination as a nation of invincible and righteous conquerors in the mold of the GоІdеn Ноrdе.

The reason would be it stops them from invading Ukraine at later date. They already can’t gobble up the Baltic countries.

    9. New_Poet_338 on

We have been down this road before – when Ukraine gave up its nukes. They should not expect anybody to honour any deal not written in stone. That means NATO membership is a requirement. Anything else is just delaying the inevitable next war.

    10. leadMalamute on

Of course they do, They are also war criminals, common criminals, murderers, rapists, kidnappers, etc. etc. etc. Why should they get anything?

    11. wombat6168 on

So nothing changes from what he’s already said. So keep destroying ruzzian high value targets and stand strong. Ohh and Ukraine may just keep any ruzzian land it stands on

I think Zelensky said that he would consider something equivalent to NATO, like a little NATO, something with security guarantees that would bring in the US and some other countries if they were to be attacked again.

    14. spindle_bumphis on

It’s interesting they cannot seem to wrap their heads around NATO being a defensive pact that countries willingly join for mutual security, not a malevolent regime of murder an subjugation.

It’s like a gang of criminals saying that they’ll only stop committing crimes when all neighbourhood watch programs are disbanded.

    15. torqueing on

Ukraine won’t go for it. They’re not losing so why take a shit deal. The people there want a deal but only if there is a guarantee that they won’t be invaded again and they are willing to give up Donbass for NATO membership. Nothing less

    16. rainbow_killah on

He wants to negotiate now that Ukraine is blowing the shit out of Russia?
I think Ukraine has many more thousands of missiles to send back to Russia before things are even !

Ukraine wants to bury Putin 12 feet under and Russia wants him at ground level. Let’s meet in the middle.

Unfortunately for ruzzia no one in NATO other than Trump, and the sycophants in Hungary and Slovakia (although I think Fico is on borrowed time) give a fuck what ruzzia wants. Ukraine will solely determine the terms of peace. And the overwhelming majority of Ukraine’s allies are on record for that condition.

ruzzia is making small gains on some portions of the front line. Ukraine is quite willing to trade a km here and km there for ginormous ruzzian casualties, and in the background it is pursuing a campaign of ruining the ruzzian economy, and producing more and more of its own weapons. Don’t let the ruzzian disinfo campaign of turning a molehill into a mountain in respect of territorial gains convert you into a doubter. Every day the situation becomes more desperate for ruzzia than Ukraine in the greater context of economy and sustainability.

Even the “massive” retaliatory strike by ruzzia today: notice anything about it? It was actually pretty weak in scope, and not nearly as encompassing as either prior strikes or the recent strike by Ukraine, which has already launched another strike tonight.

Putler really hopes to capitalize on Trump’s accession to power on Jan 20th, hoping a quick meeting between them will pump ruzzian efforts to obtain a favorable outcome. But no one else is buying into it.

The limit the size of its military is so fking comical because it’s literally screaming we will invade you later.

    21. Zealousideal7801 on

NATO wants Putin-free eastern countries up to the pacific.

Guess what will come first – Putin’s wishes, or Natos’s wishes. My bet is on NATO, thanks to the unbreakable will and the sacrifice of Ukrainian heroes.

    22. Ambitious-Score-5637 on

Russia’s stance is like a Necromonger – keep what you kill. No penalties or investigations of war crimes (including MH17); looting of museums; kidnapping of thousands of Ukrainian children; captured Ukrainian land is now Russian; Ukraine not able to ever militarily defend itself; no reparations paid to Ukraine for destruction of purely civilian infrastructure. Oh, and Ukraine is not a participant and has no say in any so-called ‘peace talks’ only Putin and Trump. Seems like a good deal for Russia.

      Edit for clarification

    23. Embarrassed-Golf-931 on

Sure. After the war we will Chang the name to northern hemisphere treaty organization and they can join that.

Ukraine will decide what is in its best interest, not Russia.

No shit? That’s like saying Joe Biden wants ice cream or Vice president elect Donald Trump wants more little kids to molest with Epstein.

    26. This is not new. The Russians have been saying this for almost 3 years. This is not news it is repetition.

    27. Class_of_22 on

Ukraine isn’t gonna agree to that, I think we all know that by now. Zelensky has explicitly stated as such.

    28. CardboardJedi on

More and more it’s not Ukraine trapped in a fight with Russia, Russia is now trapped in a fight with Ukraine. The longer they hold out the more it will cost them till they implode. Swan Lake anyone?

If I were Zelensky, I would take that deal if part of it was Putin being turned over to Ukraine for war crime
