I don’t think anyone is morally or by any other metric obligated to make it easier for the Russian political class to justify de escalation. But making it easier would seem to make it more likely.
Doesn’t have to be nukes, there are also reports of French and British boots on ground possible. That would probably be a good domestic excuse for them to fuck off.
There are rumors the russians may be freezing bank accounts, which makes it difficult to believe they can’t recognize they are having serious problems.
