      He’s probably not wrong in my opinion, I read the reason given by the Ceann Comhairle as to why precedent is there and it seems legit. I’d say giving them speaking rights would be more of a headache for the government, but they can’t really say that. SF want as much of the opposition spotlight as they can.

      It’s highly possible that they’re concerned about both? Without speaking rights, how can independent TDs practice their constitutional free speech to discuss/challenge said issues if they don’t agree with FF/FGs stance?

      God, the man gets so defensive over opposition when it’s a kinda a requirement to have a fair democracy.

      Si is wrong, people are concerned about this issue, taking away the opposition voice in Leinster House in favour of government supporting TDs just telling everyone how great the government are doing. This election has really shown how dirty and sleazy politics is in Ireland. Jobs for all their mates is more important to them

      For once, I don’t wholly disagree with Harris.

      Maybe the non-Ministerial Inds will hold the Govt to account in public and in the Dáil chamber, as opposed to behind closed doors in Govt backbencher meetings?

      Oh yea we’re more than satisfied that part of the oppositions time to raise the issues brought to them by the electorate will be allocated instead effectively to the government to congratulate themselves.

      By the time the technical groups are speaking most of the government and main opposition TDs are gone.

      It’s funny that Harris has never actually had to worry about opposition speaking time. He’s part of a generation of FG TDs who’ve never been in opposition. Harris himself was only on the back benches for 3 of his almost 14 years in the Dáil so far.

      This is such a vapid thing to say. Every TD would be doing their constituents a disservice if they didn’t fight to maximise their speaking rights. I notice he didn’t say anything while FF and FG took a couple of months to work out a program for government.

      In today’s world of social media opposition TDs could just make decent longform videos on topics that they are concerned about. This would likely raise more public awareness and discussion of a topic then any two-minute speaking time clip called. It was social media they got Ming elected in the first place.

      On the issue of speaking time the whole system needs to be reworked, for all of its faults the British system of pmqs is better in many respects as questions come from all over the house including government backbenchers.

      Leaders questions here are a bit of a show and tell, the first question has to be approved by the office of the ceann Comhairle so nothing controversial is generally allowed. Making detailed social media videos gets around this.

      And if people care enough about an issue it will gain traction. But that involves doing a bit of work which many politicians do not like.
