The article does not say where they will get the gas. Is he pandering to Trump or Putin?

It also says closing nuclear was a mistake yet promises more gas plants?

So basically He wants to build the Backup Power plants that Habeck (Green Party) wanted to build during the reign of the “Traffic Lights” Coalition. Bit weird that He is Recycling an idea of the Green Party, but we do need These Backup Power plants.

Gas, seriously? Have people learned nothing from the disaster of 2022?

Once you truly see what human stupidity actually looks like – you begin to terror. It looks like power. It’s terrifying.

That guy is such a populist. As if starting to build gas power plants can be “connected to the grid immediately” Like they won’t even be build while he is in power.

But also Reuters makes it sound like Germany has a need for that. Like November was quite cold here. A lot of people heat their homes starting in November. So saying 79% increase from October 2024 is really distorting statistics. The increase was significant but it shouldn’t be compared to October 2024 but to November 2023. And that increase was 31% now that still sounds bad. But not as bad as 79%. An Increase from October to November was expected. It’s just more pronounced due to a lower amount of Wind.

    6. Even if they got in and started building these where are they going to get the gas from? What are they going to do, force Ukraine to reopen the gas lines? And how is any gas plant that goes operational by about 2030 going to compete with wind unit prices?

Sounds like standard right wing fantasy politics. They will likely end up as generators of last resort if they ever got built.

50 lol. These populists don’t even bother coming up with realistic numbers any more. Reminds me of The UK Conservatives saying they’re going to build 75 new hospitals.

Last 15 years I‘ve been reading that Germany desperately requires Gas power plants for backup. Nothing happens, CDU completely ignores the problem. Then, finally the Greens put out tender to build a few. And now, at least the CDU recognises the problem as well, took them long enough. However, just saying a big number without any information regarding power output is useless.

Btw, for people saying where to get all the gas from. The idea is to use them for backup and reduce gas in total (most gas is used for heating and industry) through electrification. Gas power plants are quite cheap to build and maintain, it‘s a valid backup option until something better comes along for long term storage.

And that is the CDU in a nutshell. Crazy and dumb, all about money and power no matter what. Schröder and the SPD may have started the blowjob contest for Putin, but Merkel and her CDU certainly embraced and intensified it.

In terms of € per kWh, gas turbines (GT) and nuclear power (Kernkraft) are the least efficient ways to produce electricity according to this diagram by Fraunhofer ISE:

      [https://www.enercity.de/imgt/assets/cms/enercity-de/magazin/2024/unsere-welt/stromgestehungskosten/Grafik_Stromgestehungskosten.jpg](https://www.enercity.de/imgt/assets/cms/enercity-de/magazin/2024/unsere-welt/stromgestehungskosten/Grafik_Stromgestehungskosten.jpg)

I’ve also heard that gas turbines have been shut down, because the costs have become too high with rising gas prices, rendering them uneconomical. But those who still have them might seek subsidies from the government for keeping them in reserve for backup.

Our strategy for the energy sector already includes the building of c. 50 hybrid-enabled gas powered Reserve power plants, so I guess he means that?

Or is he talking about additional 50, which are not necessary and nobody wants to pay for?

Reading these comments reminds me that the Americans do not have a monopoly on being thick. Between the tribalism, misinformation (on both the “for” and “against” sides”), the insults, and just how confidently wrong most of the comments are, I am just really sad and a little scared for us.

Power stations aren’t build by government in Germany. Companies build them, if it makes economic, long term sense. If…..

His party also floated the proposition to extend the lifespan of nuclear power stations in Germany. Unfortunately for them, all the operators said that it didn’t make economic sense and they’d continue the decommissioning process as planed. Though.

    15. Stop giving abject wankers positions of power or we’re all doomed.

    16. EinSchurzAufReisen on

      A) I would love to see this idiot build them with his own hands B) he has no business in deciding if a power plant gets build as this is mainly a company decision and than a state matter and than maybe the country can say something C) if the German state takes the lead in building power plants (no matter which party) we will not a single new one within the next 10 years as they will still be discussing when to start building it.

    18. Time-Young-8990 on

That’s so stupid. Not only does it contribute to climate change, we need gas for the moment to get our homes.

    19. Beyllionaire on

Typical of Germany “if we absolutely don’t change anything then we’ll be fine 🙏”

    20. Could we get someone with balls that says they will invest in a couple of next-gen nuclear power plants?

    21. Competitive-Move5055 on

What’s with Germans and gas? Every time they get pissed they more chambers and plants for gas.

    22. PersimmonHot9732 on

Country with no reliable, secure gas supply builds 50 gas fired power plants. Seems reasonable

    23. Reddit_User_385 on

Why not make 50 battery storage facilities where excessive generation from renewables can be stored until the time it’s needed? Would have the same effect, just be long-term and independent of someone who will sell you fuel.
