I get what she is trying to do and I agree with keeping phones out of school or having somewhere secure for students to put them during the day but it seems fishy with reports that makers of the pouches have been lobbying the minister coming up to this.

My daughters school already has a box at the front of the class. Kids put phones in as they enter and take them when class is over. Works flawlessly. Why are pouches specially needed? Stupid over complication.

This is another bike shed moment.it won’t even last a year.kids will just bring in a old phone to put in pouch and keep the phone they use on them….9million.how many homeless would that take off the streets, how many overtime shifts would that pay for Garda/nurses to help ease the mess.this country is a joke

Legalised corruption. Some TDs mate will get the contract.  I’m fucking sick of this bullshit.

    5. Mobile phones? Contracts for millions? Michael Lowry in government?

      What year is it?

Give every teacher a plastic box. At the start of class they can take the phones and put them in the box on their desk. At the end they get them back. Would cost maybe €50 per school. Absolute waste of money for those pouches when you can open them with a magnet or by hitting them off a table.

Why don’t we just throw €9m into the bin instead? We know what will end up happening, this will go to a mate of some government minister who will then make it cost twice the original price. Then the government will spend an exorbitant amount of money on PwC to consult on why it went over budget.

How completely stupid. Do we think teenagers only have one phone or one single device with connectivity. It’s kind of staggering they go ahead with this. I mean, this sub got edge itself to a froth about a big shed, this hits more spots than that.

These will be sourced in China like the ventilators that were never used

    10. AlienInOrigin on

You mean €20 million? These things always end up costing far more than they said it would.

What a waste of money. Seriously frustrating that people voted this lot back in. They have proven they can’t be trusted to spend money wisely at all. God help us for what they end up wasting the Apple money on.

The amount of money this country needlessly pisses away is just infuriating. I just wonder which Minister’s buddy’s pocket this will find its way to.

Just make it illegal for kids under 16 to have a smartphone. Problem solved and costs nothing.

    14. Academic_Noise_5724 on

Would it not be better to just ban phones in primary schools? People forget there was a time when parents didn’t have a direct hotline to their kids. If your plans change and you can’t collect them, just ring the school.

Is it really controversial or is it just a vocal minority of gobshites?

    16. Difficult-Set-3151 on

Just tell students to keep the phones in their bag or pocket. They need to learn restraint anyway.

    17. It’s ridiculous. A huge waste of money, you really have to wonder who prices these tenders

    18. DuckMeYellow on

ah… 9 million doesnt seem like a lot for all the schools in the country to get these pouches… or have the government succeeded in warping my sense of normal?

they need enough pouches for every student now and enough for upcoming students and it needs to be high enough quality because you’re taking the responsibility of storing someone elses property.

Probably could be done cheaper and there are probably ways to get into the bag but I do not see any initiative that is being implemented nationwide costing less than this.

    19. Intelligent-Aside214 on

9 million for all the schools in the entire country really isn’t that much. We also got it cheaper than what the north got it for

€9m is a bargain for the country-wide positive improvement to secondary education it provides.

Imagine the compound effect of having secondary students off their phones for 5-6 years. Let’s say it raises the average number of leaving cert points per student by 5 (conservatively). What other single initiative could raise the collective education by that much for €9m?

“Tender” “Compete for the contract” 😉

    23. Are these contracts when they are finalised public? Or would you have to submit a FOI request?

    24. Electronic_Ad_6535 on

We’ve come full circle, Michael Lowry will award it to ‘digi-pockets’, an eager new start up founded by Denis o’Brien

    25. itstheboombox on

My school spent loads on these pouches.

We all knew they were pointless and had already figured out how to get round them before the first phone was even pouched.

Teachers gave up on em pretty quick. Complete waste of money.
