Doesnt sound like free speech, banning a political party, no matter of view. Imagine trump banning the democrats.

Instead of dealing with real problems (stopping buying ruzzian resources, stopping unending flow of asylum seekers) they ban AFD, who got their popularity from these failing in the first place of Merkel-Shioltz government.

    3. ProfMordinSolus on

I’m sure banning them is totally going to work and not spark an even stronger rise in their ideology. 👍

    4. Whisky_and_Milk on

As much as it would a right thing to do and a good for our society, I doubt they’ll get enough legal grounds to do it.

“All in favour of banning the AfD, please raise your *left* hand.”

“All in favour of *not* banning them, please raise y… Oh, you’re doing it already.”

The fight for democracy starts now! For Fukuyama!

You ban a political party because of its rhetoric and it goes to underground, radicalized and do stupid sh:t. Learn from history. They should go through its bank accounts and books.

    8. Unterwegs_Zuhause on

As per constitution, a party threatening the German constitution can be banned. There are many legal requirements for this and the AFD fulfills all of them.

Thank fuck, something actually good might happen, for fucking once.

And before you hyper centrist types jump on me, yeah, I love freedom too. They dont. Its pretty clear what we gotta do to keep those freedoms then ey?

Sad thing is that a ban doesn’t get rid of the Nazis. After 5 years an different party with the same people will gain momentum.

This always feels like a dangerously myopic option to even allow. I know AfD represents many bad things you want to prevent, but at some point over a long enough period of time, other parties will take over. And what happens if they use this option? This is one of those tools that may be too dangerous to exist because it can fall into the wrong hands.

What if Meloni or Le Pen wanted to outlaw factions on the left? Wilders?

Trump is probably taking notes on how to remove Democrats from swing state ballots in the US.

In Canada, the ruling liberal party is polling outside of the formal opposition (the Quebec-only party is running in second), and the conservatives will have an outright majority and not even need to form a coalition government. What happens if they decide that Trudeau’s party should never be able to run candidates again?

Banning them only leads to them getting more popular, as their supporters will be angry and feel that establishment if suppressing their voice and if ban passes, different party with similar ideology as AFD will pop up and get larger vote share than AFD ever did

    13. jombozeuseseses on

There is a 0% chance it will pass and there is a 100% chance it will invigorate its base and attract more voters.

Following “just” procedures for the sake of it and for the world to see fail in slow motion was a core reason for the Democrats’ defeat. It paints a picture of bureaucratic incompetence and hypocrisy to those fence sitting. Germany would be brain dead to follow suit.

I have a feeling most of these comments here are from people not from europe

I’m sure all those angry voters will just suddenly start voting CDU after the AfD ban. Surely they wouldn’t vote for even worse people, right? Right? Far-right? Extreme-right?

    16. rad-n-01 on

Sure! Let us ban the second largest party! That will definitely teach it’s voters that their concerns are being listen to!
Idea: How about addressing all the concerns that a large chunk of the population have, so that they don’t feel pusged to vote for the AfD to begin with? But I guess a ban is just easier…

    17. purgatorius722 on

Maybe German parties should try solving the problems of their country instead of banning political parties? The rise of the AfD is their fault in the first place.

    18. You can’t ban a party that has so many supporters. A ban will only end badly…

    19. Thekingofchrome on

Is this a good idea? Banning it only means it stops becoming an official view into an underground view.

I am no supporter, and in fact am very left wing, but banning the AFF will lead to greater complications, as people will feel they are not being heard.

They should absolutely be subject to the law, but silencing the party does not make it go away, it just goes underground and acts in different ways.

    20. ilfottutosovietico on

They will become martyrs then. Good luck dealing with them then.

I don’t think banning them is the right solution.

Maybe, I don’t know, the far left can raise again? And talk about workers’ rights, strenghten unions and high taxes for the rich?

Instead of fucking throwing everything under the rug, we could start doing actual left wing politics.

    21. tvojlokalnisotonist on

With all the support they have lately this is gonna end badly no matter what…

If Elon’s salute, given his seemingly closeness to Worries Europe’s Right parties, German especially — if he salute was either the spark or the “nail in the coffin” event for it; that would be funny in it’s own way.
