As love letters go, this one is a bit too long-winded for me..

Love the feeling of a fat, sweaty, bum bouncing off my belly.
Only a true wordsmith could put it so perfectly though.

He truly is the greatest to ever do it. Who else could write a love letter so distinctly in their own style?

Whenever I hear quotes of his love letters to Nora, It feels like a massive invasion of their privacy and not something that should be public knowledge. Like wouldn’t you be mortified if you knew everyone was reading that and commenting on it? Were the letters published by their estate or how did they become public?

I find them incredibly sweet. They were both products of an extremely conservative and repressive society. They found each other, obviously connected deeply, and stayed together for the remainder of Joyce’s life.
Lots of couples are dirty weird fuckers in private. There’s nothing wrong with that. To me, this is like reading anyone’s smutty texts; it’s off putting but I’m clearly not the intended audience.

Started reading Ulysses recently and it’s pure filth.

Strange man. I mean, his works are lauded as being genius and then you have these letters. Pretty sure he had a daughter diagnosed as scizophrenic and some psycologist at the time thought it may have been heriditary, from James’ side. One look at Finnegans Wake and you can see why.

Lovely to have this kind of inspiration with Valentine’s Day coming up.

I’m so glad I read that. It’ll justify pouting Domestos into my eyes later.

I always remember the stance his grandson took around his literary estate, I think he burned diaries of Joyce, stopped a lot of access to his work and writings. Then you read letters like this and you can see his point of view, no one wants to have their grandparents personal letters analysed and discussed.
Note: his grandson took legal action against people and seemed to be primarily concerned about making money from the estate.
