Should have been the main way to arm ukraine from the beginning!

    2. Golden_Joe_ on

And who is he exactly to decide whether or not Europe will pay for it? He has no authority to issue such promises. It’s easy to promise something when you’re not responsible for the delivery of the promise.

The entire discussion about percentage of GDP connects to this effectively. Any raise in percentage would have been an increase in weapon sales for the US anyways. Many people have simply not looked at this from this particular angle. The US GDP percentage of weapon sales is not a small one.

And yes. We can as well foot the bill directly instead of this convoluted forth and back where money ends in the US anyways.

P.S. Politically it is better if the Ukraine has debt with its European neighbours than with a dwindling super power across the Atlantic. They play on too many fields already and show clearly that Europe is not of any priority for the time being.

For those looking for numbers and sources: Sales of U.S. military equipment to foreign governments in 2023 rose 16% to a record $238 billion. [Source](https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/us-arms-exports-hit-record-high-fiscal-2023-2024-01-29/) So any further raise in allied nations will logically also raise their sales even further, as they are one of the biggest exporters to most NATO nations.

Why are all people in power suddenly sucking this orange POS off?

    6. TeoGeek77 on

It is a useless waste of money. Russia cannot be beaten in military sense.
The more these people spend – the more they lose.
Ukraine has lost the war. There was never any other option, to be honest, and they knew it.
The western civilization needs to accept the reality and start to think how to make friends with Russia again.

    7. DanishMan45 on

We need to end this war (favourably for Ukraine), get the hell out of NATO, and produce our own weapons.

    8. Eremitt-thats-hermit on

Defense budget to set up own production, importing US arms for helping Ukraine. Makes sense

    9. IMO, this should be a stopgap solution until Europe has build its arms industries.

    10. No_Regular_Klutzy on

I have a very strong opinion on this matter.

I don’t care if the capacity to increase European production isn’t enough this or next year, and Ukraine suffers as a result. Even though I’m sympathetic to the Ukrainian cause, I don’t want to see Europe submissive to the Americans at a time like this. Europe first, Ukraine second.

Buying American weapons to support Ukraine is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen the more you look at it.

Russia is not just our enemy, it is the US’s too. We need to invest in ourselves and not just foot the bill for this whole situation with our taxes going to the USA.

Is it the best decision? Hell no. But we don’t live in exactly normal times lately.

**Edit:** I’m not a fucking tankie. And clearly this is not the best option, ok? I’d like to say that diplomacy can solve this, but it probably won’t. **We are not a money cow**, and we aint a saint as well. So if push comes to shove, I’m sorry, but I want my taxes to be spent in Europe, rather than paying for American weapons that we shouldn’t be paying for in the first place. **Blame America, not the Europeans** for the damage this will have in the short-mediam term to Ukraine

    11. SunnyP3ak on

Instead of spent 5% in buying US weapons maybe we should invest that 5% in build up our defenses so we dont depend on the US president and we dont need to pay their exhorbitant prices.

So in 10 years time, when we need it, we are ready.

Overpaying for US weapons now sounds like a good waste of money that could be used for our protection, like investing in drones.

    12. talk-spontaneously on

America buy Deutsche car, EU buy America weapon? Okay. Is that Trump art of deal?

And maybe he send Melania back for Slovenija. Stormy Daniels be First Lady

    13. TylerD158 on

      Reuters clickbait.

      Headline is misleading at best:
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday urged the United States to keep supplying Ukraine with weapons to fight Russia’s invasion and said he was sure Europe was ready to pay the bill.

    14. Odd_Praline5512 on

I am glad that these countries are showing USA that they don’t need us. They send all of our military bases back to the USA.

    15. Sure let’s do that.

But lets also invest even more to European weaponry and bit by bit phase put US arms. Not just from aid to Ukraine, but from all military purchases.

Also if US ever needs help, then there certainly will be a price tag for our dear “ally”. Also if US wants to benefit from European weapon development then they have to pay premium

    16. casperghst42 on

He is the NATO spokes person, how can he decide what Europe is going to do.

    17. CavaloTrancoso on

Better yet, why don’t we build the fucking weapons and stop giving money to countries that are not our friends?

    18. lolek444 on

Or we should start producing more weapons instead of fueling the oligarchy across the sea

    19. coldFireIce on

      What a cocksucker.

Also, he has no authority to speak for Europeans.

    20. natasevres on

This is insanity, Europe Will pay for US arms? Seriously?

And people are baffled by Brexit. This is 100% why, the union is so weak its baffling. Why not buy russian arms instead?

    21. Neospecial on

Unfortunate. Since trump isn’t the type to give discounts to friends and allies, rather jacking up prices because he knows they’ll pay it; I’m sure non-allies though would get preferential discounts from him to “curry favor” with the recipient.

The same with energy; “buy more from Us at Our prices – OR ELSE”

    22. Very wise of Rutte.

It’s about denying the Americans the economic argument to stop supporting Ukraine

    23. Independent-Ad-8344 on

USA laughing all the way to the back this war. Europe bankrupts itself on energy and arms and Russia depletes it’s manpower

    24. hmtk1976 on

Ramp up production of European arms and ammunition manufacturers rather than buying US stuff.

AFAIK Nexter can build more new Leclerc tanks. Not sure if production lines for new Leopard 2´s still exist.

    25. futurerank1 on

      Damn, we really are stupid.

We should be ramping up production! Just make drones, they are cheap and key
