Hridzho the cat has been serving on the frontline alongside his owner for almost three years. Before the full-scale invasion, the cat found his way to Liudmyla, and when she decided to join the 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade, Hridzho went with her.
Hridzho wears a collar with a phone number on it—just in case he gets lost. However, Liudmyla assures that the cat never strays far. Together, they work at the military dining facility, where Hridzho is often treated to snacks.
“He doesn’t wander off at all. Whenever we arrive at a new location, I feed him and tell him, ‘This is where we live now.’ I know he’ll stay close. I can leave him and go about my tasks without worrying,” Liudmyla says.
**A Loyal Companion**
Liudmyla has been on the frontline since 2022, joining the 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade in Volyn at the age of 48. She brought Hridzho along because she couldn’t bear to leave him behind.
“How could I leave him? Neighbors might feed him, but who would scratch his head? There was no one to leave him with, and having a cat requires love and care. It’s about more than just feeding him; there’s fur, his needs, and his personality. I decided to take him along and look after him myself,” she shares.
In the army, Hridzho holds the honorary rank of “Meow Sergeant,” Liudmyla jokes. From the start, he made it clear to other animals that he was in charge.
“He became a combat cat right away. He had to defend his territory, and now he does it successfully at every location. He practiced in Volyn and has perfected his skills in the East,” Liudmyla says.
He acts like a commander’s cat. He doesn’t beg for food. He’ll come, observe, and someone will give him something. If he meows, it means he’s really hungry.
**But Hridzho doesn’t get his meals for free—he has his own duties.**
“Like every soldier, he has tasks. He’s part of our psychological support team. He often lies on the couch, and anyone who approaches can pet him, which helps calm them down. In this situation, that’s very important—for them and for me,” Liudmyla notes.
