“The IFI received $4m (€3.8m) from the United States last year to support cross-community projects in Northern Ireland and southern border counties.
That’s really not that much. If it’s important programmes, the Irish government could fill the gap with its all-island funding surely.
And in fact, it used to be even less money:
“Funding to the IFI from the US has increased in recent years, from $750,000 in 2019 to $4m last year.”
I can’t help but wonder what NI might have looked like with a Trump Presidency in charge while the Troubles were still active; no George Mitchell to chair peace talks that ultimately lead to the GFA.
This is less than €5m in funding.
For comparison, Ireland allocated over €800m for Shared Island funding last year.

America’s impact on international aid distribution especially is actually a very genuine issue. Remember Rwanda? Remember who protested against intervention and actively sought to prevent the coalition peacekeeping force? That’s right, the US. In a world organisation such as the UN, where possessing nukes means an automatic veto, a loose cannon is a problem for everyone.

I don’t think Britain and Ireland should be accepting foreign aid regarding this anyway. However, is the US going to step back as a guarantor of the good friday agreement? Trump didn’t really seem to care that much last time during brexit and the hard border issue. It’s not really about the money, we can just pay it, but the money does indicate that the US is a stakeholder in the peace.

An irrelevant sum. What really matters is the ending of aid for people in real need and for disease eradication and vaccination programmes. That is a terrible thing.
Important to remember though that, unlike Irish Aid, US Aid is often tied to buying stuff from the US, like guns.
