There has been a continuous attack on our neutrality the last number of years.
We need to push back on any further military integration.
No to NATO

We should stop kidding ourselves that we’re neutral. We’re not, we’re clearly aligned with the US and European powers.
Are the Swiss under the same pressure?
This is a sober assessment but will be pilloried. We can maintain our quote un-quote neutral posture, but it won’t come without costs like spending-down political capital in Europe. The world is changing rapidly, and the EU and Europe generally will have to start picking up the tab for it’s defence. That includes Ireland, whatever framework we choose to do it in. Be it all on our own, within an EU defence framework (which means our muddled concept of neutrality will have to fundamentally change), or NATO (which some people think is the devil’s work for some reason).
Trump sees NATO as an expensive line-item and if left to his own devices, would probably dispense with American participation if he could get away with it.
We’re going to have to get our thinking hats on. In a scenario where European states or NATO are pinned to their collar in the Baltic Sea, and there’s fuckery off our coast that threatens us, it’s not credible to be picking up the phone for help and simultaneously delivering lectures about our morally superior neutrality.
Since NATO is a defensive alliance, what is the reasoning behind not joining?
In the situation that we get attacked and we are not in NATO, how will we defend ourselves and/or our assets?
Our neutrality stance is a global embarrassment and we should be ashamed of ourselves wagging the finger while we bum protection of everyone else around us…
this country’s defence capabilities are a joke. we rely on others to fight for us when needed, but really, when it comes down to an actual threat, we pretend we are not home, while hiding behind the sofa with the lights off.

Ireland can protect neutrality while also having the capacity to protect it’s own air space and waters. Not only is it embarrassing, it’s hypocritical.
If we’re not going to help protect Europe, at least most of our politicians are having the good sense to stop proudly boasting about it.
we have no business in NATO. anyone who has an issue with whats going on in palestine, had an issue with the iraq war, had an issue with afghanistan, had an issue with the gulf war, has an issue with prospective invasion of iran should know better than to entertain the idea.
I perfectly happy with more military cooperation within the EU.
NATO means possibly being dragged into whatever mess the US gets into, or supporting Turkey, whose actions in the Middle East are scandalous. No thanks.

Funny that, as NATO tolerance for its members assisting genocide seems to be quite high.
Ireland needs to join NATO. We cannot be neutral anymore, heck we don’t have a proper navy or air force to defend Ireland from possible Russian aggression.
Our troops also need a proper wage.

Notice how it’s always neutrality that’s under debate and never military capabilities of the state.
I find it wild how hard they’re still pushing NATO when the US is explicitly threatening two of its NATO allies with annexation.
Maybe we could place all the young male asylum seekers into the defence forces for 2 years service and then let them stay.
Neutrality is only acceptable if you can actually defend yourself. You don’t need defense forces capable of repelling an invasion because that won’t happen.
We do need however a force that can defend our critical infrastructure and act as enough of a deterrent to any aggressor
That means a proper Air Force, drone force, and Navy with the necessary sonar to deal with submarines, and radar capabilities and anti-air and Anti-ship missiles.
Maybe ask the same of Austria.
Furthermore we are Militarily Non-Aligned not ‘Neutral’
If you are going to copy Swiss neturality then maybe copy their Democracy first.
“Join NATO” and people can’t even name a threat to Ireland’s sovereignty that isn’t the UK, a founding NATO member.
There is no reason to join NATO unless you want to waste money for the US’s imperialist projects. Ireland’s neutrality is valued by everyone outside of NATO, and Ireland’s neutrality is hated by everyone *in* NATO.
NATO membership should be on the condition Ireland’s sovereignty is respected, i.e. the north is returned. Otherwise the whole thing is a ruse
Think of all the great naval and air bases dotted around the island. Cyber security and communication centres…training and joint operations bases… it would be amazing!!!!
this is very cynical of me, but I don’t even know if NATO will stick around in its current state considering the rhetoric coming from trump
And who are we fighting? An American proxy war? The Muslims next door? Or are we just fighting deteriorating mental health? When we spend so much time looking at screens being misled, pulled this way and that are we to be believed that any agenda other than peace is the best solution? And if we cannot have peace in the world can we not have peace within ourselves?

to have neutrality, we need to be able to protect ourselves to certain extent without relying on other countries. thats not the case at the moment.
