This is the best possible move. I know fast tracked memberships tend to be controversial, but with the lunatic back in the White House, the EU needs more friends locked in the fold.

the whole economie of Europe is going down and they hurry to open an other pit to trow endless money in? Befor the war it was the most corrupt country in the world, and on top of that are the Russians shooting now the whole place to shit.

    3. TungstenPaladin on

No countries deserve a fast-track into the EU, not even Ukraine. If the sovereign debt crisis taught us anything, it’s that member nations can be both assets as well as liabilities. Right now, Ukraine has a lot of liabilities.

    4. Noah_canon on

We should help Ukraine as much as we can. But I don’t see how them joining the EU will help us, or them. If anything, the damaged ship will just sink faster from too much load.

    5. I mean you can fast track that all you want, but how are Ukraine realistically satisfy the EU goals before 2030 or later?

    6. Simple-Chocolate8098 on

Unlike the USA, the European Union provides a minimum level of civility.

    7. Adortion634 on

It would be good if Ukraine joined the EU but a huge reconstruction project and political reforms in Ukraine would have to be completed first. Otherwise there is no benefit for Ukraine or the EU.

    8. Let’s (actually) help them win their war first, then they have to fix their corruption issues and let’s talk then.

    9. Tempires on

Fast tracking countries that aren’t ready to join only brings issues.

      >The European Union aims to speed up Ukraine’s membership in the bloc by **opening two negotiating “clusters” during the first half of this year**, a senior official said Tuesday.

      >…

      >Despite having received the legal green light to start negotiating with Brussels, **Kyiv hasn’t yet opened the first cluster of negotiations**. **The whole process involves six clusters**, which are subdivided into a total of 35 chapters.

      Clusterf…ast-track.

It seems we in WB need to start war to get in EU. I mean it is practicly easy job to do with current world state.

[Edi Rama joking about this, but as they say in every joke there is a truth.](https://youtu.be/_wFnJdjTYuk)

By all means continue to support Ukraine but not a fan of fast tracking EU membership. The system of aligning to EU standards (political, judicial etc) should not be open to compromise.

    13. ThrowFar_Far_Away on

Hell no. Do you want another Hungary situation? Ukraine is corrupt AF, them being invaded by Russia does not suddenly change that. The requirements to join are not just some arbitrary rules, they are there to make sure the EU functions.

    14. Ill-Appointment369 on

If this happens without the Western Balkans then trust for the EU will go down significantly

    15. Kagrenac8 on

Dumbest idea I’m heard in a long time, and I’m fully for supporting Ukraine.

    16. Thats not a good solution. Just because Ukraine is being attacked by Russia doesn’t make it a good candidate . Ukraine and Russia are branches from the same tree.  Ukraine is very conservative and corrupt. It would be so expensive to help them out . Also its a big country and i cant imagine the amount of people moving to the west.

    17. aldebxran on

I don’t see Ukraine fully joining the EU without some kind of ceasefire. Putting actual EU boots on the ground would 100% be seen by Russia as a massive escalation and I don’t think the EU would risk it, seeing the state of it.

    18. Past-Present223 on

Reasons why we want Ukraine to join.

      * Army with most combat experience against our main adversarry that is larger then most EU armies.
      * EU population is shrinking. Additional people means larger workforce and more GDP. More GDP moar powah.
      * There is a bit of a global competition going on for resources. Ukraine has a bunch.
      * We need to help rebuild anyway because we dont want Ukraine to become a failed state that Russia can destabilize. Rebuilding means work for our companies.
      * Russia wants their territory

      * We need to provide security guarantees and prevent Russia from retrying after reconsituting their forces. NATO would be best but US may not be reliable as we hope. We need to be able to fix shit in our own backyard anyway. So EU may have to do.
      * Ukrainians are just like you people that struggle (likely more then you) to build a decent life for themselves.

I get the idea, but I don’t think ANY new countries should be added to EU until we have found a reform for the current problems (like a single member being able to block literally every important decision, or that we can’t kick a country out if it stops following EU rules entirely).

    20. Roky1989 on

I’m all for membership and also for fast-tracking it, but it must be fast-tracked by Ukraine. Do the reforms, do them good and build in meaningful safeguards, so we don’t have another Hungary on our hands.

    21. OffOption on

Send them everything we can, and then some.

The yanks wanna abandon them. We cant do that too. We stand now, or we crumble later.

    22. KhalasSword on

That would be cool, but I’m sure that this won’t lead to anything at all, empty promises.

    23. How will they ever be allowed to join while having a border dispute and a war?

    24. No. They definitely should not join eu.
      We have our own problems.

    25. EdoValhalla77 on

Smart move. Europes most corrupt country. Jesus Christ

    26. silverionmox on

The *acquis communautaire* is not a hurdle, it’s an integral part of the benefits of the EU membership, and as such we would do Ukraine a disservice by not requiring its implementation. That’s no reason not to be flexible and make specific partial agreements for this emergency situation, where we don’t have the luxury of time.

    27. Waalross on

Okay, so people have no fckn clue what they are talking about.
If any european country seeks to join the EU, it has to go through an extensive process in which they have to fulfill a number of criteria.
A stable government, stable and just law system, stable economy, fulfilment of human rights… etc. But those are just the very basics. All in all, their law has to link up with EU common law by the time they are joining.
Now, if they get to the point where the EU actually starts considering them for negociations, they need to make agreements on a gazzillion matters.
First of all I am thinking of agriculture, as it’s structured way differen in EU than it is in Ukraine.

Let’s say all of the rules have been fullfilled and all the talks have ended, now the ratification process starts within all EU members. Only after every single member signs off, Ukraine could join.

Fast tracking this process ONLY means the EU is putting people on that to get papers done quicker. Everything else is just chitter chatter.

    28. user6161616 on

They shouldn’t be let into the EU. We should help them win but they are nowhere near being a modern, secular, democratic nation.

Help from a far. Not an EU country.

The EU as a whole should stop the enlargement for now, draft new treaties, become a federation and stabilize itself. There’s a lot of work to be done but accepting a large, corrupt country as Ukraine doesn’t help the EU whatsoever.
