This rumour has been floating around for a while now and my limited understanding is that, while it’s ‘volunteer-led’, he’s taking a wage because he’s the main person keeping the show on the road. It’s a bit murky but he seems fairly adamant he’s not in the wrong.

That whole article is pretty damning. He comes across as someone who’s been getting away with things for a long time and doesn’t like being scrutinised.

Its always the ones you most suspect
David Moore has been shady for decades. It was always very fuzzy how separate Astronomy Ireland (the club – which was never registered as a club or society) and Astronomy Ireland (the shop) were. Like the club was just a marketing tool for the shop which was horrifically overpriced and a private business that David Moore profited from.
It was never clear what you got for your membership of Astronomy Ireland (the club) as you still had to pay for the magazine and pay to attend the events.
What’s really a surprise is that he has gotten away with his financial irregularities for so long.

I used to work for Astronomy Ireland, back in the 90s as part of a student Summer employment scheme. The whole thing was shady as fuck.
Basically the government paid me to work for them. It was explicitly explained to me that my chances of getting the job depended on letting the money “rest in their accounts” until after Summer.
They were literally hiring out some of the students to do some sort of construction work for people.
Moore wanted more money.

Remember when students could work for the summer for peanuts and the government would top up the money.
Well Mr. Moore employed some of them in astronomy Ireland, except they weren’t working for astronomy Ireland, they were working for his other company building telescopes. He got the profit from all the telescopes sold, and the government paid the wages. Then when the summer was over he would keep them on for £2 an hour.
