I haven’t heard of old coins as gifts before. Maybe he just wanted to give you something connected to greek culture, as Alexander the Great is considered one of the biggest Greek heroes.
It’s a very nice coin I remember getting a couple of those as a pewee every day and using them to buy some koluri (kind of bread like pastry with sesame seeds ) and florina’s chips with oregano and sandwiching them inside the koulouri oh and a pack of juice on top and then after school going to my local arcade and using my last such coin to play tekken 3 ^^
As you can see it’s a coin from the 90s and not even in pristine condition (Although good enough to have it as a medallion no doubt, and the wear implies a little bit of antiquity which adds to its appearance as an accessory 😀 ) so the value is more sentimental than monetary .
My guess would be that it was given to you as a trinket/token of appreciation, a gesture like “hey have this to remember me by” .
It’s not that old to have any value.
100 drachmas coin used up until drachmas resigned.
Just a kind gesture I guess.
It’s value was around 0,30€. Nice looking coin nevertheless.
It’s a coin from 1990 and stopped exchanging mid 00’s
around 2004 if I recall correctly.
Some Greek grandmothers can give old coins to young children they are fond of as a gift. Although I am not sure if there is any folklore about it, I think it’s like a kind gesture. When I was little grandmother gave me a few older drachmas with holes in the middle that were pulled out of circulation. I still have them somewhere.
