I’m no economist, but that seems like a lot.
€5 billion on capital expenditure on schools in the last 4 years : €28m per year on prefabs to prevent overcrowding is a rounding error.
The alternative is children who cannot be accomodated, longer travel times, and more over-crowding in existing classrooms with concomitantly worse education as a result.
There are prefab houses built for Ukrainians (no fault of theirs, just trying to contextualize) in a field outside a small town in Laois that cost €345,000 per unit, for 45msq.
Someone is making out extraordinarily well from our Government’s decisions and spending in recent years, and let me assure you it is not the tax payer.
And that isn’t even touching on the billions spent on HAP enriching landlords, and impoverishing every renter not quite of the income levels to access it.
We have a government at the service, and to the benefit of a select class of individuals and businesses in this country, and so long as they keep house prices ticking up, tricking homeowners into the delusion of prosperity, we can expect this to continue.
We’ve a very rapidly growing population and are building a lot of schools by the looks of it. You are going to need prefabs to plug the gaps while they’re being built and expanded.
Looking at the capital budget going into school building programmes the prefabs seem like what you’d expect tbh.
