Truth! If Canada wants this, I think we should let them join.

Idk, perhaps fist and major reason being they are not in Europe?

Closer cooperation, some kind of new ambitious EU-Canada agreement – sure. But talking about EU membership just isn’t serious.

However, seeing Canada joining the EU while the UK is still out for no good reason would be funny, ngl.

I think the requirement of Canada having to be in Europe for an EU membership could be worked around.

The bigger issue is the alignment of interests in my opinion. Locality places an important role in what kind of issues one has to deal with. With Canada being so far remote from all other countries in the EU it would often stand alone with its issues and sometimes laws that make sense for most EU countries wouldn’t make sense for Canada. So Canada would always have to negotiate from a special position.

Imagine for a moment that Canada had some kind of idiot country at its southern border that’s enacting stupid law after stupid law. Some of these stupid laws might have certain effects which Canada would want to counteract. Lets say they wanted to change how they protect their border. Canada would have to get the EU commission and the EU parliament on board and make the other countries care to make these changes, if they fall under EU law.

Don’t get me wrong. As an EU citizen I am not opposed to Canada joining. I am rather questioning if that would be to Canada’s benefit.

Edit: Another example. Every EU country has to contribute to the EU’s budget and that budget is redistributed into the EU’s projects and to help weaker economies within the EU. Canada being a strong economy would most likely turn into a net contributor. Now imagine the EU creates a new law to strengthen train networks within the EU. Would Canadians really be willing to finance our trains over here in Europe?

Canada and EU working together would benefit both.
But how can we let a country from an entirely different continent join though?
Countries like turkey, georgia and armenia potentially joining is already controversial and they atleast have some part in europe or very closeby the borders.

Build a maple syrup pipeline right into my backyard please. Canada, the Dutch will never forget what you did for us!

    6. If Australia can take part in Eurovision I can’t see a reason why not.

From a Canadian, thank you. Seriously. I’ve never felt so vulnerable or alone and even if it’s small in the face of what we’re up against this helps.

I’m American so my opinions are meritless but it’s not the most insane thing in the world for the EU to look at Canada and even Australia/NZ. They need to entice the UK back as well. A powerful EU is a much needed counterbalance to the wobbling US- China (and misfit Russia) Seesaw.

Of course it’s highly unlikely and would come with its own serious concerns, but the world could do a lot worse.

I hate Guy verhofstadt with A passion and this is exactly why. He is an EU megalomaniac.

Yes! Join us Canada, we’ll be a reliable ally and partner

    11. Let me tell you, we’ve got some big ideas, big ideas today. You know, we’ve been thinking about a lot of things lately, and I’ve got to tell you, Canada have a tremendous opportunity in front of them. A tremendous opportunity. And believe me, I know opportunities, folks. Nobody knows opportunities better than me.

Now, let’s be clear—Canada is a beautiful country, great people, beautiful landscapes, tremendous resources. I know this, because I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it all. But here’s the thing. Canada, as great as it is, can do even better. They can do so much better. What they really need is to be part of something bigger, something that can really help them grow. And folks, what’s bigger and better than the European Union? You look at the EU, it’s got power, it’s got influence, it’s got resources. And you know what? Canada belongs with the best.

Imagine Canada, part of the European Union. Tremendous benefits—tremendous! First off, trade. The trade deals would be incredible. Canada has a great economy, we all know that, but imagine the access to markets all over Europe. You’ve got billions of people in Europe, folks. Billions. They’d be able to trade freely, and it would be a win for everybody. And let me tell you, Canada’s economy would absolutely explode. We’re talking jobs, growth, and prosperity like we’ve never seen before.

Now, you’ve got to think about security too. The EU is strong. Very strong. Canada would be able to join forces with some of the best and most powerful nations in the world. They’d have security, they’d have power—just look at what’s happening with Russia, with China, the US. The world is changing, and Canada joining the EU would make them part of a team that’s tough, smart, and ready for anything.

Not sure about full membership, but I think deeper cooperation will be beneficial for both sides.

    13. That’s great, it would also be great if the UK rejoined as well.

    14. LittleFairyOfDeath on

I mean… i would have said the fact that its *european* union takes it off the table but sure.

Also its not like you have to be part of it to be good allies

    15. MormorsLillaKraka on

I like Canada, but Canada should not be a member state of the EU.

    16. LeLurkingNormie on

There is a reason : In “European Union”, there is “Europe”

Canada has a 1280m border with Greenland so I don’t see why not.
