I think this is a good way for Trump to save face as he can now tell his supporters he got a great deal and is not supporting Ukraine for free.
Also, tgis essentially tethers the US to Ukraine. No rare earths if Ukraine is conquered. So US now HAS TO help Ukraine.

Ukraine was persuaded to give up all the soviet nuclear weapons on their soil for security guarantees from Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Russia has demonstrated that their word is utterly worthless, now Trump is showing the world that America is just as untrustworthy.
Putin’s Russia has broken 1 and 2, and now Trump’s America seeks to break the third.
