“We will always protect our own interests – however and whenever that is needed,” Ursula von der Leyen said after Donald Trump warned tariffs against the EU would happen “pretty soon.”

The European Union is ready to engage in “tough negotiations” with Donald Trump to prevent a trade war between the two sides of the Atlantic, Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday, a day after Canada and Mexico struck last-minute deals with the White House to temporarily avoid the painful imposition of 25% tariffs.

What appointments did we already make with Biden that Trump can claim as “surrender” of EU?

    3. Firm-Salamander-5007 on

Von der Leyen is an incompetent bitch. She would simply surrender to American demands just as she surrendered to Russian ones!

Can’t say I believe her, but I wouldn’t mind being surprised.

lol to all the comments already saying “wIlL eU dO sOMEthINg tHoUgh”

People seem to forget that the **EU already tariffed the US in his first term**, especially hitting red states:

*”the EU also decided on retaliatory tariffs on $2.8 billion worth of US imports that included orange juice, peanut butter, Harley Davidson bikes, and whiskey from Tennessee.”*

Back then Trump tariffed aluminum and steel from the EU.

A month from now there will be no tariffs and European leaders will be talking about the fruitful and respectful conversations they’ve had with Trump.

Just agree to buy all the gas the U.S can send our way (to replace the russian LNG), promise to increase defense spending (which we have to do anyway), and make him feel like he’s forcing us to do it.

And if he still refuses, promise to rename Denmark “Donaldmark” or something (don’t worry my friends, you can change back in 4 years).

“OK, Donald, first we’re going to go over the concept of the EU. In order to discuss that, we will need to discuss the concept of co-operation and mutual benefit, which I understand has been something of a hurdle in previous discussions…?”

AKA the EU will bend the knee like the grovelling bastards they are lol.

      In the same summit:

      – Scholz rejected the idea of common debt for rearming Europe.

      – Eastern European countries rejected buying from European arm manufacturers rather than Americans.

Talk is cheap. An actual united front requires actions and compromise, which national leaders refuse to do.

Talking about arming Europe…with what money if Germany and the Netherlands refuse common debt? They are aware that most countries can’t afford the sheer amount of costs or the rates they would have to borrow by themselves, right? And Eastern Europe, still attached to the idea of the American freedom daddy to the point they prefer to play along with Trump than actively join forces with Western Europe?

This is the tough negotiations and plan B? Arguing among ourselves as usually?

    13. No-Bluebird-5708 on

lol. Tough negotiation meaning please please daddy Trumo I am fragile not too rough…..

As mentioned a few times, contrary to the stable mango genius’s never ending whining (and ignoramuses that keep repeating the nonsense), the balance of trade between the USA and EU is rather balanced if you add services to the picture and not just goods:

      [https://policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region/countries-and-regions/united-states_en](https://policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region/countries-and-regions/united-states_en)

As you can see, the EU has a large trade surplus in goods, while the US has a large surplus in services.

However, if you also consider direct investments in each others economy, the EU actually invests considerably more in the US than the other way around and hence more than compensates for any kind of surplus it may have.

So the best way for the EU to react to US tariffs is to restrict access for services, or add penalties to them etc. Plus, forcing European companies to invest in their home market with “incentives” similar to what the US has been doing for years.

It would also make sense politically, knowing that the lion’s share of that services surplus of the US is generated by the big tech companies, of which a number of CEO’s have been cosying up to the Trump administration (or are actively running it in Musk’s case).

quotation marks in ‘tough negotiations’ are there for a reason.

EU should ally with Canada to target Red States with retaliatory tariffs and boycotts.

Good, you need to have a spine in global politics. Time to be taken seriously, finally.

100% tariff on Tesla and Starlink, and a ban on Twitter and Facebook.

lady, get on your knees and lick that ass.

We have to do it every day at out job, so it’s only fair that you do it too.

since she is the heir to Merkel’s policies, she will give trump whatever he asks for “peace at home”..

maybe europe should give up german politicians to lead it a little.

    21. oceanicplatform on

EU (or maybe better the UK) should tariff the English language. That would fox ‘em.

    22. NutsyFlamingo on

Let me guess.. Trump says it’s $300 billion deficit… EU Leaders scramble scoffing that ‘technically’ it’s $100 Billion… get exhausted ‘explaining’ then Trump says ‘fake’ then EU can’t get over need to be told they’re right to see he’s fking with them.

Then EU gets Trump to accept $100 Billion ? No more! Then laugh at him he’s so stupid while giving him the $100 B he wanted from beginning?

    23. adarkuccio on

I really don’t like the way these people talk, it shows a position of inferiority and fear, it shows that trump is the one in control, by saying this you are already validating the superior strength of your “opponent”. The EU should learn how to even talk.

    24. rantheman76 on

It seems rather easy. Just tell Donald you’re going to do this and that, especially for him, but limit that to the argreements already in place. That worked for Canada too. Donald will sell this a s awin to his gullible lot, but we all know he has nothing. You only need to make him feel important. Like with Greenland “okay, you can put up military bases in Greenland”. He will think he has won, but the bases are there already. Fuck the fascist.
