The Russian state has a long-standing history of suppressing, mistreating, subjugating, and murdering people of the Caucasus. Case in point: the Circassian Genocide

I honestly struggle to fathom why the Russian Empire thought it was a good idea to annex lands previously controlled by the Persian Empire (the country of Azerbaijan used to be a part of the Persian Empire) and take over the Caucasus back in the day. I think the Russians back then got too drunk on power and decided to gobble up whatever came their way.

If it adds anything to the discussion, there’s a lot of hate directed to Caucasians (Avars, Chechens, Lezgins, and so on) within Russia. Some landlords in Russia won’t even allow Caucasians to rent an apartment; they’re pretty much treated as second class citizens in Russia.

This event (Aldi and Chernorechie massacre) barely scratches the surface of what they’ve done.

And quite a few “good russians” still try to justify the Chechen wars too.
