She’s probably correct, it’s a standard of driving issue as much as anything. There’s some absolutely grim driving going on around the place, so those people won’t give a fuck about the speed limits anyway.
Ya it’s not typically the ones following the rules who cause accidents it’s the ones who ignore the rules of the road that do.
This will only see to inconvenience drivers, slow traffic causing longer traffic jams and generally inconveniencing everyone.
Why don’t they just enforce existing laws instead of attacking the citizens?
Oh right speeding tickets a would make a nice piggy bank for them which is made easier the lower you set the limit…
At least for urban centre, my home town had found one of the best way to enforce speed:
Pair a traffic light with a speed sensor, if you exceed the limit by x the light turns red. You get a ticket from camera only if you break the red light, which is quite an expensive ticket.
The result is that practically now one speed, because you’d do anything to avoid a red traffic light.
And the thing is timed well, you have plenty of time to stop as the speed sensor is far back

lower speed gives more time to react too. Rules are there for a reason, and if people don’t follow them, they’ll learn the hard way, either through fines or insurance refusing to cover their own mistakes. Nothing teaches better than losing money.
Only people who don’t obey current speed limits have issues with new ones.
Instead of actually doing something about those 80 km / h goat trails where most crashes happen, like upgrading the road, they reduce the speed limit… Pretending to solve the problem rather than actually solving it.
I feel sorry for her and what I’m about to say isn’t really aimed at her… but as a country, we have an element of reactionary negativity to almost any change. From smoking ban to recycling bottles to this, you can set your watch by the speed of “ara sure that’ll never work.” Never mind the detailed planning, consultations, international use cases and research done into the change.
Something like 3/4 road fatalities occur on rural roads with a speed limit of 80 or more. Reducing these speed limits is one of a number of things – which can be done simultaneously – to try and combat road deaths.
At this stage I can’t be convinced otherwise that there’s some sign and bollard manufacturer that isn’t lobbying the government.
The only positive impact will be on the amount of money they make from speeding ticket fines, even if they don’t catch more speeding drivers, they will still make more money.
lowering speed is by far the biggest impact on road safety. There is incontrovertible proof about this. Shes insulting her son’s death by claiming otherwise, even if it wouldnt have saved him specifically. Like, why would you campaign against proven science.
Without dismissing her pain, which I cannot imagine, What how does she know about road policy? The points she makes are just speculation. It is just a website capitalising on her pain and suffering to make some money off clicks.
I get people don’t want to drive slower, but there has seen a lot of shite around this change. I’ve seen people say everything to it won’t work to saying it will somehow increase accidents. None of these are ever sourced.
On the other hand we have the example of Wales which did change their default limit in Urban Areas, to general success. Maybe some people just want to bring the same culture war language here.
