A billion bottles in just over a year!

The machines are always out of order and many bottles are rejected, add to that I used to put them in the blue bin, unnecessary errand inflicted on people
Mad figures when there’s only 5 million of us. That’s 200 bottles and cans per person, per year.
There are definitely way less littered all over the place now. We always recycled them so this is a bit more of a headache for us, but it’s definitely yielded the wider benefits, so can’t argue.
Would definitely love to see more opportunities with it though. Maybe government-funded and managed Re-turn kiosks where the deposits go to fund local amenities and charities.
Lets be honest, the biggest problem with the DRS is the gobshites that wait until they have 18 bags of bottles and cans to return.
They take up a whole machine for an hour while a queue forms.
I would make a few improvements such as making the voucher universal instead of tied to a specific retailer but it isn’t that big of a burden on people.
They need to start putting the barcode on the bottom of cans so i can crush them at home and take a bag of 300+ instead of a bag of 30 uncrushed each time.
Walked 15 minutes with 2 full bags to recycle, machine out of order, great! that really pissed me off.
Wish they went with the machines they have elsewhere that you can just tip the whole bag into and the machine sorts them.
Haven’t seen one yet that’s accessible for wheelchair users
The machines are not great, other countries have done the R&D for us here, why did we get saddled with substandard, buggy machines?
One where you can toss in a bag of stuff, and let the machine do the work. Output cash or pay into an app, rather than producing the world’s most fragile token for whatever shop you happen to be at.
Fucking biggest scam that we’ve just accepted. I never signed up or voted for this shit. Fucking joke of a country.
Not going to debate the benefits vs necessity of this as it’s been done to death a million times.
But do we all accept that this initiative could’ve been executed so much better than it was? i.e. better machines, more accessibility etc etc
Absolute joke of a system. I have a recycling bin beside my door, that I use and pay for, now I have to be further out of pocket until I drive back to the shop. It’s a hassle, and hasn’t changed any of my habits. Poor pensioners who have to walk to the shops with bags of bottles (inc my parents). It’s changed absolutely nothing. I love waiting in queue for a smelly machine to do what I could be doing at home.
Don’t buy any cans or plastic bottles anymore. Too much hassle.
We should hit the 2 billion mark as soon as I get around to emptying the bottles from the boot of my car.

Great, now roll out machines that can take all the cans at once and introduce some kind of digital way to get your money back. How many useless paper receipts have been printed instead of having an option to load it onto a store savings card or direct deposit into a bank account?
What happened to reduce. There should be a push for reusable bottles you fill up in the supermarket, that’s discounted rather than some of the bring your own container places that are only for virtue signalling.
The idea of it is great. The impact is probably positive as well. The frustration is there as well!
As someone who pays for bins to be collected and has been religious about throwing all the recycling in them, I don’t appreciate the extra effort for no obvious reward (it feels like more falls on me as a customer and less on the companies producing these products).
That being said, the implementation of it is the biggest flaw – half baked idea that we have to deal with.
The machine itself, grand – does the job fast or slow. It’s a problem that they made all retailers buy their own machines as they are often broken or full, and I’m sure the cost of these machines won’t come out of the salaries of the executives of the said retailers – it was and will be passed to the customers.
The cash back, once you do your bottle deposit you get a specific coupon for that shop only – highly inconvenient if you’re on the go and want to dispose of your bottle or a can and not lose the extra money. Also, it’s a paper receipt… What age are we living in? We can tap our watches to pay for almost anything, but when it comes to receiving money it can only be done through the equivalent of a nameless check? I feel like the only benefit of this is you not using it and or losing it, and therefore the same people who introduced the charges will get a benefit.
Sometimes, the sticker on the bottle could be wrinkled, or the can squished – understandably the machine can’t read it, but then what do you do? There is no bin around to throw it out into to be recycled (at least the 3 machines that I used recently), so what am I supposed to do with those unacceptable cans/bottles? Bring them home to be recycled? Well, we’ve gone full circle now!
Generally I love the idea and I make efforts to offset my carbon footprint, but you can tell there was very little consideration for the customer when this was being rolled out. I keep hopes that it will get better, but man does it suck to know we could’ve done it right the first time!

It’s been such a wildly successful scheme, and it’s great to see how much the public got behind it too. Rare that I’d give the government credit for anything but this scheme has been outstanding.
Would love to know what charities etc the profit goes to, and how much the execs (who are mostly retailers and producers) earn. Last time I checked none of this info was available which is worrying given the millions they must be raking in.
