It shouldn’t be pressure from the EU that gets us to spend some money on our own defence. I guess he’s just saying it to cover against the inevitable attacks the left will throw and gobshites will eat it up.
The fact we need the uk to cover our skies is a national humiliation. We don’t even need them. We have the money to do it ourselves.
Some people in our country need a kick up the arse. I just hope it’s ourselves doing the kicking and not a foreign state because if it’s a foreign state they’ll brake us in two.
We should be doing it regardless of EU pressure
And we should be investing heavily in drones for land air and sea
That sounds like a diplomatic way of saying he got the arse chewed off him by the rest of Europe at that meeting in Brussels during the week.
Ireland should be increasing defence spending, get more naval ships, planes for the Irish Air Force and looking into joining an EU military alliance set up by other European nations for protection.
Ireland cannot be neutral anymore.
Our defence policy for years has been that the US would step in if something big happened. The US is now threatening to annex their neighbouring allies and will probably never be trustworthy again. Not to mention fascist Russia on the edge of Europe. We’re going to have to stand on our own.
We’re heading into seriously turbulent times and these “be grand” and “EU can f**k off” posters are either deluded or are posting in bad faith.
If a country irelands size wants to be credibly neutral, it needs to take a look at austria.
We’re dependent on the uk for air and sea defence. Its not neutrality and its an embarrassment.
You want neutrality?
Pay for it.
Pay to be able to defend it… last to be able to enforce it.
But look around… other neutrals are no longer neutrals… its a form of military isolationism.
Neutral nations don’t expect other countries to protect and monitor for them for free. We’ve been freeloading off other EU and nato nations for too long.
