Another reason why people, not in the civil service, know that its a cushy number, despite what the people working in the civil service say (and will say in response to this comment)

My (limited) experience of the civil service from working briefly alongside them as an independent contractor is that it can be fairly cushy work, but not well paid and fairly soul crushing. I would hate it. No one seems motivated to work hard because there are few incentives. But this creates a pretty toxic culture where everything’s on the long finger and the motivated employees are overworked to make up for the unmotivated employees until they burn out.

Has Fitzmaurice all that extensive experience in the private sector? He sold turf or something, I’m sure that didn’t allow for unpaid leave but plenty of jobs do. Some even offer paid sabbaticals, which would presumably cause Fitzmaurice to shit himself.

      >”In the private sector, career breaks are facilitated occasionally, but no business could function with employees disappearing for six months to 12 years, while still having a position held open for them,” Mr Fitzmaurice said.

      >”It defies logic that the civil service continues to operate in this manner, with hundreds of positions left in limbo, causing major staffing and operational issues,” he added

12 years is obviously unusual, but of course it’s one case in over 50,000 people (maybe well over, this seems to include some public service bodies but not others, so at least 50k assuming it includes all civil service bodies). A 1% rate of career breaks isn’t causing the organisation to cease to function.

So do people get paid a salary while on carer leave?

I’d say he’s conflating career break with special leave. I presume that civil servant is working somewhere else (e.g. an international organisation)

Probably took the career break offer during the recession.

What’s he shiting on about now? Career breaks were extended by the government around the time of the crash to try to get rid of some civil servants. It went from a maximum of 2 career breaks of up to 5 years each, to 3 career breaks of up to 4 years each. It’s unpaid leave and in some and is one of the few perks left of working in the civil service.

We need to create another body that starts to automate and optimize processes currently held by the civil service. Bit by bit it would gradually take on more and more of its work load, but in a more efficient and sensible manner.

Having worked closely with the civil service over the past few years I can safely say (with the exception of very few members) they’re all a bundle of wasters waiting for the second they can lift the pension.

Nothing worse than a TD firing off PQs in a desperate attempt to make it appear that they are actually useful.

We’re more the fools for working in places we can’t do this.

Fair play the lads who got away with it
