There are already alternatives out there. Someone already posted en.mapy.cz in this thread. Open Street maps is another option.

Trump is going to drive europe in to the arms of China, but he’ll be advised of this so what exactly is his strategy here?

    3. Outrageous_Action125 on

I use HereWeGo and [mapy.cz](http://mapy.cz) OpenStreetMap is a good alternative too. Not sure what maps are behind Waze, but I heard it’s pretty good as a navigation when driving.

Do we have working replacement for GPS in general? I mean that would be easier to shut down for the mango mussolini.

    5. Citymapper is great, they work in the UK but I don’t know if they support mainland Europe yet.

    6. Rylonian on

Very unlikely that he just shuts it down. He’d probably rather have Google rename the continent to Americope.

Openstreetmaps is on par with Maps at this point when it comes to pure mapping. But streetview and this kind of fancy things will never happen except with a lot of moneyz.

We have the hardware in the form of the Galileo system, so the software can be there very quickly.

I don’t understand how European leaders were so naive for decades? People think EU is a new heaven we don’t need any military, the US will protect us, we’ll use all their tech and let them buy out companies.

Nokia is one of the largest map providers. You don’t need Google.

For the love of God please do this preferably at least three separate entities

Golfe de Gascogne en France = Golfe de Bizcaye partout ailleurs

    13. The real full world map providers can be counted by fingers on one hand. The rest are just services (apps) relying on those. The only realistic alternative is open street maps AFAIK (and this is Open Street Maps Foundation, UK). AFAIK there are no “real” map providers in EU. You need to actually TRAVEL ALL ROADS to make street views, you need SATELLITES to make satellite maps.

The services listed on the “EU Alternative” are all based on global providers Google Maps or Open Street Maps (including mappycz, herewego, and so on). If those global providers decide to cut off EU for whatever reason, all those apps are dead.

These post always sound so childish. We need our european version of this American company. Guess what, it already exist but you dont use it. If it doesnt already exist, its probably pretty hard to create. Do you think European companies dont want to replicate American success, or were they just waiting for your approval?

The only thing I see as a positive about where the world is going, is that I think that finally us europeans are starting to get moving and realize we need more unity and stop depending on others…

Try Here (We Go). It’s Dutch. Occasionally changes its name to make it more cringy but as well as having a fully-featured map it’s also the built in maps software you get in some cars.

Citymapper when using bikes or walking in any cities. And waze when driving.

    18. wickeddimension on

OpenStreetMap is wildely used in various services. Free, community maintained.

TomTom also exists, which is a dutch company that makes navigation systems as well as a (paid, 20 euro/year) mobile app for navigating.

Not just maps…Europe must be stronger in many fields…army is one of them! We need EU army! When we will be strong, others will fear us. America is our friend, but Trump isn’t

    20. Fine-Drummer2604 on

TomTom go is probably the most advanced European alternative to Google or iOS maps. If I’m not mistaken they even sell their data to them

Nothing will happen until / unless the threat of Google Maps (or any other US based thing we use in Europe) going away will become real.

    22. Careless-Pin-2852 on

During the Iraq war the US shut down GPS and Europe said we need an alternative.

      And now you have one.

    23. HeavenlyPear on

I am using HERE WeGo and it’s not bad, even though Google Maps contains so much information that it cannot be replaced by just a single app.

    24. Howling_Squirrel on

      OSM doesn’t provide traffic info.
Here maps is the best I think.

    25. casettedeck on

I would pay for European alternatives of google services where privacy is guaranteed by EU.

Mapy.cz is amazing, has the best cycling and hiking maps tried it in Italy and has never been disappointed

    27. We have mapy.cz and I will take them any time over google. Not even because of political shit, they’re just better

In Poland there’s something called CZ maps (mapy.cz) and MI maps (mapy.mi). The first one shows moutain routes and forest paths in smaller cities and towns, while the second is for large city areas, it also shows a few forests but is mainly made for places dominated by buildings. Hope that helps!

As a Canadian, I really wish that the rest og the free world would start developing real alternatives to american big tech. New phones, new operating systems.
