These headlines are so needlessly provocative. The interview is in German, but he basically rejects concerns that the (German/European) defense industry is not capable of absorbing higher military spending amidst all the talk of raising the defense budget even higher than 2% of GDP. He says that the problem isn’t a lack of capacity or volume, since they are for example already making more artillery shells than America. The problem is the lack of long term contracts and stability, because it’s impossible to scale up production capacity without those.

It’s all about money. If Europe gives maybe 1000 billion Euro for weapons to Ukraine then Russia can get defeated. But the people may think is it too much money? Only to retake east Ukraine from Russia? Would it be a better deal to just leave east Ukraine to Russia and use the money for something else? But what if later Russia wants to take all of Ukraine? How much are we willing to pay then?

Would it be unrealistic with a facility contract, where the governments take over the maintains cost if the facilities is not in use, capacity keeps being high in low consumption periods and a lot of risk is mitigated

Even that is ridiculously little compared to the at least 1.4 million 155mm shells that Russia produces. And as we can see, they are not producing them in order not to use them, but to implement Dugin’s basic principles of geopolitics. The script has been known since 1997. Europe is not even able to protect its own borders and should now actually give its neighbor Ukraine everything it needs to stop Russia – Denmark has done it and in Germany we are struggling with the AfD and the left, who want to actively support Russia? Now that the USA is leaving Ukraine to Europe aka Germany and, as it looks, Russia? We won’t get very far with the few hundred thousand from Rheinmetall. I, born in 1975, grew up in West Germany in the shadow of the tanks, my child (18) is growing up during the war and I will do everything I can to ensure that my grandchildren will play in the shadow of the tanks again.

At the Handelsblatt conference “Security and Defence”, the arms industry is calling for better predictability and long-term orders. She defends herself against a frequently voiced accusation.

**Berlin.** Two percent, four percent or perhaps five percent of gross domestic product (GDP), as US President Donald Trump demands? Three weeks before the Bundestag elections, speculation is rampant about the amount of Germany’s future defense budget.

What is certain is that [spending on the Bundeswehr will rise sharply in the coming years, says Carsten Breuer, Inspector General of the Bundeswehr](https://www.handelsblatt.com/politik/deutschland/verteidigung-russland-denkt-krieg-in-einem-kontinuum/100104767.html), at the Handelsblatt conference “Security and Defence” in Berlin.

If the Bundeswehr were to receive two percent of gross domestic product in the future, the annual budget would be 85 billion euros. At five percent, it would already be 213 billion. “Can such volumes be achieved by industry at all?” asks the country’s top soldier.

“We are already producing more ammunition than the United States,” says Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. “We are ready to deliver, and we are in a position to make the Bundeswehr ready for war by 2029,” says MBDA Germany head Thomas Gottschild.

“To do this, we need substantial financial resources, clear purchase quantities for more planning security and reliable export conditions,” Gottschild demands. Only then can companies invest and achieve economies of scale. The MBDA boss also pleads for an armaments acceleration law.

So far, the production of important armaments such as battle tanks has lagged behind, which is due to the low order volumes and the fact that there are no long-term commitments for financing. “Politicians now have the task of setting the priorities,” says Susanne Wiegand, chairwoman of the BDI Committee on Security.

I think we’re going to need it too. Europe, UK, Aus and Canada need to become a power house of military might to contend with the growing Imperialism.
