I get why they have to keep the door open so to speak but I think it’s time Europe started to live in a world without America. Kowtowing to everything trump wants is just feeding the bullshit and will last much longer than just his presidency.
The annual “you couldn’t buy this access and exposure” vs “the cost of this!” debate, with a side of “surely we’re not going to kiss that ring.”
The US is, outside the EU, our largest trading partner, our source of direct investment, and basically core to our prosperity as a nation, like it or not, like them or not.
The ministers will be doing regional visits and the Taoiseach will have to go do the Donald ass kissing exercise. I think I’d rather be a line minister this year…

I get why they do it, but christ this year it feels more distasteful than others.
The US is arguably the most important country in the world. It is an absolute behemoth economically, militarily and culturally.
Ireland has had an incredibly good relationship with the US for basically the entirety of modern Ireland’s existence, and it would be the absolute height of moronic idiocy to sully that reputation simply because we don’t agree with what the president is doing. That diplomatic squad absolutely should go over there, and they absolutely schmooze like the cute hoors I know they can be, as it costs us essentially nothing to maintain a level of cosines and access that most other countries can only dream of.
I mean I get we need to do this but we are essentially bending the knee to a vile piece of shit. I think there is a moral question at play here. Whatever about doing it with Bush, this is the first US president that has threatened allies and essentially formed anti EU (and Ireland) policies.
If things got worse (like an open trade war, Gaza plans followed through), I’m fairly certain the whole sure we need to tug the forelock to keep jobs argument becomes a bit thinner. The minute Trump or Musk make any rash or unwise comments about Ireland I think the government will take a hammering. Musk has amplified rotten bastards like Mick O’Keefe so he’s not a million miles away.
We have hitched our wagon to a country that is facing huge turmoil in the coming years, even if it flip flops back to democrats. So I get it, we need to bend the knee come hell or high water. why oh why didn’t we try to get a couple of things going when we had the chance.
The whole Boston or Berlin thing we seem to have forgotten about is going to become a deafening roar if the EU decouples itself (as it should) from USA’s dying hegemony

The reality is that Ireland going will probably have very little impact in steering US policy towards Ireland, Israel, or anywhere in between.
**BUT** – not going is exactly the sort of thing that would enrage the absolute lunatic in the White House into who knows what. We absolutely cannot afford not to go.

* That the Palestinian cause is dear to Ireland
* That Donny needs to have his wood polished by every Irish politician available
