IT’s actually a bit surprising how often you will run into Religious groups at fairs and exhibitions. The Ploughing has dozens of different groups that set up at the ploughing trying to lure people in with free cups of tea.
Ah the old hold this empty tin of beans with some string attached while we “measure” your stress levels by asking you questions while a needle twitches wildly on some fake dial. Used to have great fun with those pricks on Abbey Street while waiting for my friend to finish work.

If they sell the giant boxes of washing powder too, it might peak a bit of interest.
Scientology or any other form of lies and fairtales will not take off in Ireland due to our growing apathy to organised religion.

I live in NI and went to the Omagh show last year (for non farming people it’s a place for farmers and equestrians to showcase their animals). There was a market stall section and a fella selling books by L. Ron Hubbard and encouraging people to come sit in his tent to have a chat about scientology. I really regret not taking him up on the offer so I could waste his time and have a good laugh in the meantime. Sad to see more and more of these folks trying to scam people.

There was one of these outside my hotel in Germany a few years back. I got baited into talking with one as he called me English. I said I would read their book (to get rid of them) but I did out of curiosity and boredom. It didn’t vibe with me so I tried to drop it at their table the next day and get out of there without getting caught for another lecture. One of the guys ran up the street after me and was insistent that I get audited and they had a car on standby to take people to the church. He had his hand on my shoulder and not grabbing me but kind of trying to guide me his way and there was something about his tone that was aggressive but not loud. That was the last straw of me being overly polite and told him to fuck off and keep his hands to himself.
It was a really weird experience and got me wondering how often it worked.

I mean, Scientology is evil but pretty genius when you think of it. Make people do what is in effect a lie detector test. Ask intrusive questions and press when you see their heart rate respond. Find out people inner secrets and dirt as a result. Blackmail them into paying for courses
