So now Trump just have to help take back the occupied areas, so he can get his minerals?

    2. Pleiadez on

One million billion jewels for you mr Trump, now man the fuck up and help Ukraine win the war.,

    3. SeparatedI on

At this point I think Zelensky would agree to almost anything in order to get a proper defense deal, even becoming a pseudo-vassal state would be worth it. The 500B deal is ridiculous but I guess it is good for Trump so that he can wave it in front of his supporters as if he made the deal of the century.

Nevermind the morality of this type of negotiation – as I understand it rare earth minerals aren’t something you just dig up and sell. The processing is a whole industry itself that needs to be set up. Otherwise the Ukrainians would have already been mining them on their own and made all the money that is supposedly there to be made.

Hopefully they’ve sold the Minerals in Donbas.

    5. enimon-enis on

I mean in the current circumstances this deal is fine, come and take’em shiny stones, they’re all yours

    6. astralmessiah on

Why wouldn’t they? Trump is a con artist and has never once had integrity with his deals, 500B might as well be a made up number and Zelensky has played Trump like a fiddle, it is a win win to give Trump that feeling he loves of being right, making the biggest best deals and doing something Biden never could. Trumps a petulant child who is either throwing a fit or gloating cuz he’s a winner according to his ego. Zelensky is calculated and has proven to play the political game extremely well. Now America is on the hook for aligning with Ukrainian interests and supporting them in the war so they can access their new trove of minerals. If anyone is the winner here it’s Ukraine.

    7. DrCausti on

Zelenskyy could do the funniest move of all time by using the Americans and then not keep his end of the deal, join NATO and take them every chance of military retaliation.

No matter how this goes , someone gets fucked, so much i am sure off. Can’t wait to see who.

    8. Mediocre-Sundom on

Trump says a lot of things. And most of them are absolutely insane. So I will believe it when it is confirmed by Ukraine, and not a moment sooner.

    9. FederalEuropeanUnion on

They currently don’t have access to them and Trump will be out of office before the war’s over, so there’s no real downside to agreeing.

    10. So US once again managed to profit off of their most profitable business model, war that is. Once again the beloved smell of resources they could profit off of in a foreign country was simply too hard to resist.

So there’s no victory for Ukraine and it’s people, no independence, just servitude under a western dictator rather than the eastern one.

Headline should read: Trump takes credit for Zelensky’s proposal

    12. notfromrotterdam on

And now what? Is Trump going to strike a deal with Putin? Fight him? Because those “minerals” Are mostly in occupied territory.

Poor Zelensky. He’s being played and he has no other option.

    13. Zanena001 on

Ukraine is so done, lost all its best assets due to a bankers war.

    14. emergency_poncho on

So I am as anti-Trump as you can get. I find that some (very few, but some) of his ideas actually have a small grain of truth behind them and aren’t as crazy or stupid as they first appear.

For example, Greenland will definitely be a critical and strategic zone as climate change accelerates, and we know that Russia and China are both interested in that area, so it makes sense for the West to start paying attention to its strategic value.

Similarly, I think exploiting Ukrainian rare earth and other key minerals (very important for electric energy, green tech, chips manufacturing, nuclear power, and other important tech for the green transition and age of AI) makes sense. A smart, joint, and fair investment strategy would create jobs in Ukraine, inject money into the country, help rebuild badly-needed infrastructure, connect Ukraine to Western economies and value chains, provide needed technical skills and expertise, etc. So Trump’s idea shouldn’t be discarded just like that.

However, the way he presents it and how he speaks about everything is just so antagonistic and pisses all reasonable people off. He is a bully and just an awful human being. And of course if the exploitation of Ukrainian minerals is done under Trump, it will likely be a bad deal for Ukraine and its people. But this idea of investment and economic support in the transition period towards peace is critical for long-term nation-building and getting Ukraine back on its feet after the war.

So basically: right idea, wrong person to do it

    15. mathis3299 on

THis deal has been organized a long time now, under Biden, the invitation came from Ukraine. They delayed the signing of documents to be able to brownnose Trum, so that he would get an ego boost and think more positively of Ukraine.

    16. Estalxile on

If the minerals are in the west of the country, which is still ravaged by the war, that can be a win for Ukraine, US will have to invest a lot of money to get those 500 billions and they likely not going to let Russian get close to them.

    17. Jack-o-Roses on

Biden worked this deal out last August. Trump is simple taking the credit for someone else’s efforts – again

    18. Xollector on

Now trump is going to announce a peace deal with Russia, where the split the rare earth 50/50 so 250 billion each but Russian gets to keep the occupied territories. He’s going to claim to be genius ….

    19. In 2024 less than $4 billion in rear earth minerals have been produced in the world. Imagine asking one country for 100 times the amount of crude oil produced in the world.

Don’t get me wrong, Zelensky would best take the deal as his great grand children will be long dead before Ukraine can produce that amount.

    20. So EU and US do about 50%-50% financing for the Ukraine war but the US gets 500B minerals and there is no deal for the EU?

    21. hypatia24 on

      Oh joy, more lies.

I don’t have enough popcorn to handle these 4 years.

    22. Shigglyboo on

A country being invaded and massacred. This bully says “what’s in it for me”. Disgusting.

    23. Morals are something unknow to Trump.

At least this means USA will need to help Ukraine regain is own territories?

    24. quiteUnskilled on

Straight-up fantastic news. We’ll see what the Security Conference in Munich will provide on new information regarding the conflict, but selling Trump minerals that are in occupied territory and need a whole lot of infrastructure to even be mined efficiently sounds like a *really* good deal for Ukraine at first glance, also regarding continued support.

    25. Tonnemaker on

OK, but what does that mean for Europe?
Like, before the help was kind of unconditional (i know it’s with loans and stuff), now suddenly the Americans have this mineral deal.
So…. we just keep supporting unconditionally?
Or we back out? The Americans get paid, we don’t, so let them do it?
Or we try to get our own deals?

    26. KindCraft4676 on

Trump says a lot of things. 99% of the time it’s not true.

The guy’s word is worthless .

    27. DefInnit on

      “And what does Europe get?”

Kyiv: “Nothing! Because you didn’t ask for anything. But, congrats, you’ll have to send us at least 200,000 European peacekeepers.”
