The job market has been so bad for so long, I feel really bad for all those impacted.
The market lately makes it difficult to justify giving visas to IT workers.

They just didn’t say *where* this new hires will be located. But we all know it will be cheaper markets.
Did someone not tell Meta that you can’t make people redundant for performance reasons? The entire process would be illegal in Ireland because of their public comments. Furthermore, they wouldn’t be able to hire those redundant roles again in Ireland in the next 6 months.
I’m sure there local process will be clean, but I highly recommend anyone in Ireland who is marked At Risk of Redundancy to use Facebook’s public statements as a legal reason for any RIFs happening in Ireland by Meta anytime soon as being illegal.
Ultimately, Meta does tend to give very good severance though and many impacted people may be happy enough to just take the money and walk.
Huge investment in metaverse – that no one on the planet will use, let alone ever pay for 🙂
Second, as a fat bloke in his late 40s [who was a pretty early adopter of Facebook], Not a soul I know within 20 years of my age is still posting on Facebook itself, the odd granny. None of my nieces or nephews would be seen dead on it [most of them are using Snap or TicTok – and maybe “also share on Insta – but Insta is not their main social app either].
It is interesting to see in the 6 Nations rugby, that one of the biggest advertisers on the Virgin TV coverage is “Instagram Accounts for Teens and Kids” – never seen Facebook group of companies buy ads before – **their user numbers [of actual humans] must be really terrible** *[clearly compared to what they were once, or as the site that would want to be the biggest site in the world]*

Still a kick in the teeth for those losing their jobs & god help those getting a job having to be worked like a slave on less money than those they’re filling in for.
The people impacted by this (low performers) are ultimately going to be managed out anyway. That’s how it works in these companies.
They’d be getting no stocks and no bonus (a significant deal since in these companies a good chunk of your annual income comes via your bonus and your stocks), minimal merit increases, no hope of promotion and assigned low value work.
They’d be put on a PIP which is a miserable experience for all concerned.
This way they’re just getting let go faster with a golden handshake.
I think it’s really really shitty he publicly said these layoffs are due to performance. It’s going to put a stain on anyone impacted. People can underperform in one role or environment and overperform in another, but they are now tainted by his comments.
This is impacting individuals’ lives in an incredibly nasty way, just to pander to the share market and be seen to be a tough CEO.
Not really job cuts, its a replacement excersize, but yes, underperformers at risk of losing their job. Albeit that is not allowed in Ireland unless a strict process has been followed in documenting performance issues, PIPs and failure to improve after PIPs. At some point an underperformer can be fired/replaced.
AI is coming for a lot of office jobs in the short to medium term.
Maybe we should tax them on every unfounded conspiracy theory they spread.
Meta are bastards. Anyone I have met who works for them told me how toxic the place is . Hopefully these tech bastards like musk and Zuck take a trip to the bottom of the sea or get a visit from Luigi.
