The non-proliferation treaty is all about making everyone a puppet to the WW2 winners. India and Israel refuse to bow, unlike most of Europe.

Well if his Trumpiness wants us to spend 5% of EU GDP on defence we’ll have no choice but to become a military superpower with a massive nuclear arsenal just to get the money spent.
I’m not sure that was the US historical strategy in Europe, but if they insist…

    3. atnight_owl on

Let this be a lesson: never, ever rely solely on others to back you up and fight your fights. The European countries had more than enough time to develop powerful armies, but they did not – and that’s a deadly mistake. Just look at how the US and Russia are discussing a war on European soil. The EU is pathetic, and they have allowed themselves to become irrelevant.

If Russia secures a favorable or even neutral outcome, it will haunt Europe for generations. They will sow seeds of disorder in every EU country – they already have – and the EU will cease to exist. Today, it’s Hungary and Slovakia; tomorrow, it will be Romania and Bulgaria, then Austria, followed by pressure on the Baltics or a military buildup near Finland. A few more cable cuts and cyberattacks, and the EU will slowly fade away, all because it places its trust in an ally and believes in a “good and reasonable world.”

Bullshit. There is only one law among humans: those with the power to strike and kill will rule. Everything else is just a guideline.

We really need to start thinking of Ukraine creating own nukes and Europe supporting the idea.

The “negotiations” haven’t even started yet, the US vice president and secretary of state are meeting with Ukrainian officials this Friday. The US may eventually try to get Ukraine to agree to a deal it doesn’t like, but you’re nowhere near that point yet.

    6. DifusDofus on

      > The Ukrainian president is clearly concerned by some of the early signals coming from Team Trump. In January Marco Rubio, now secretary of state, suggested that both Russia and Ukraine must make “concessions” for peace. Too much, the Ukrainian president says, is being asked of the non-aggressor. Readiness to sit down with “the killer” (Mr Putin) is compromise enough. “Imagine that Hitler wasn’t destroyed…Imagine that after everything he did to the Jews…people said, okay, let’s look for a compromise.” Mr Putin, he says, has “acted like Hitler” and the wrong type of diplomacy would rehabilitate him.

Zelensky, you’re not going to appeal to American leadership, (especially not to fucking republicans and that orange hairball) to increase support by saying Putin is Hitler and trying to make this a battle against evil. Nukes have changed geopolitics, great powers are not gonna duke with each other like they did many times before unless they are forced to, you won’t be able to extract security guarantees from US.

The greatest security concern for great powers especially those aiming hegemony in this age are them being left behind economically by their rival, and China is bigger threat to US than Russia in this aspect.

      > Mr Zelensky has a warning for those who think that a quick deal undercutting Ukraine will make their lives easier. Western leaders focused exclusively on domestic politics are “delusional,” he says. Mr Putin is coming for them too, he claims. “No one understands what war is until it comes to your home. I don’t want to scare anyone. It will come. I’m just telling you the facts.” Russia is increasing the size of its army, he says—by 140,000 last year and by 150,000 this year. He says he knows of plans to send most of them to Belarus under the pretext of training, in a worrying repeat of the exercises that preceded the full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago. The assumption is that these troops might attack Ukraine. But what if they turned to attack Lithuania or Poland? “Why doesn’t anyone think that this will happen?” The maths do not look good for Europe, he insists. Russia has 220 brigades, roughly consisting of 3,500-5,000 men each. Ukraine has 110; Europe just 80. “Do you understand what is happening? Without Ukraine, Europe will be occupied.”

This scenario by Zelensky is unrealistic, Russia has no capability to occupy Europe at their state, number of Brigades are not everything.

Russia has significant equipment and manpower losses in Ukraine, and its military-industrial complex is struggling to keep up with demand despite ramping up wartime production. They lack logistical infrastructure and supply chains necessary for a prolonged occupation of multiple European nations not to mention they would be completely outmatched in the air, even without US, EU would have air dominance over Russia.

If Russia tried to attack EU, we would crush Russians and kick them out, and that’s without including future militarization of EU that will ensue now because of US pulling back.

Those Russian brigades are worth nothing if they aren’t well supplied with ammunition, fuel, good and medicine, they won’t stand chance against high tech, well supplied mechanized EU brigades with full air firepower support, now factor in that just because US is abandoning Ukraine doesn’t mean they will abandon NATO allies, it’s still in US interest for Russia not to take over the continent, so even Republicans would come to kick out Russians if they attacked a NATO member.

The best Ukraine can do now is to recuperate what territory will remain with them after US/Russia push Ukraine toward the agreement and try to get EU members to give strong military support to Ukraine short of military assurances. as EU countries increase defence spending Europe will still need strong buffer state whatever remains of Ukraine (sorry to speak so plainly but that’s how pragmatically EU will treat Ukraine after Trump/Putin force this deal on them).

    7. cringebat on

We should remove all sanctions on Russia and welcome them to the European family.

    8. Who is surprised? I don’t mean anything bad, but the aggressor (Russia) has to be included in the negotiations. The other party cannot be Ukraine. Obviously they will not be rational. They will likely want to get the best deal themselves, but they are defenders and their position is not strong at all.

I’m sure it’s not what you all want to hear, but this is a reality.

The US thinks Nevile Chamberlaining is a power move. They have failed to learn from History. They had a choice between dishonor and war. Should they choose dishonor they will have war. & Consequences.

I am so afraid that Trump and Putin really have some dark friendship. They are after all more alike than Trump and EU. They both live of lies and propaganda. It could turn real dark for Europe if they unite and make a push for alt right across EU.

    11. Unleazhed1 on

So now the U.S. talks *about* us, not *with* us? They’ve betrayed us and thrown us under the bus. Ukraine has been discarded, Europe cast aside, and we’re left to watch as America pushes its own agenda, using us as pawns in their power struggle. Fine—if that’s how it is, then it’s time we part ways with their playgrounds on our territory.

Europe must stand on its own. While the US benefits from using us as pawns in its quest for global hegemony, it is time for us to chart our own course. The American military bases on our continent do not serve our security anymore; they exist solely to safeguard America’s own interests. These bases are not a protective shield for Europe; on the contrary, they are strategic stepping stones through which the US extends its global influence. The rhetoric of “security” is nothing more than a smokescreen for an imperialistic agenda, designed to dominate geopolitical landscapes.

It is high time we, as Europe, assert our independence and take control of our future. Let the US focus on securing its own interests on its own soil, instead of using us as pawns in their geopolitical game. Only a united and independent Europe can secure its future, and this begins with ending this foreign interference.

The truth is clear—if the U.S. no longer wants to stand with Europe, then it’s time for Europe to stand on its own. The U.S. has abandoned its role as a reliable partner, and that is not just a threat but a chance for Europe to rise stronger. Let’s not waste this opportunity. A truly sovereign and independent Europe is within our grasp, and with that independence, comes the power to shape our own destiny—free from the manipulation of others. Now is the time for us to act, to break free from the past, and to take control of our future. The world is changing, and Europe must change with it. Let’s make sure we do it on our own terms.

    12. legendary_m on

We Europeans cannot rely on the US as an ally or even a friend anymore. Fundamentally the US is moving to a similar oligarchy style system as Russia and they see international organisations like the EU as the real threat to their power

    13. GushingAnusCheese on

We need to fully ignore the USA at this point, no negotiations, cut off all trade. They are a bunch of snakes. Let them rot.

Hmm a click bait title locked behind a paywall.

In the meantime it was reported both by DW and the Associated press that Zelensky had a а “meaningful” conversation with Trump.

Wait and see. We do not know enough for the moment.

I’m of the opinion (I thought this before, but it’s at least confirmed now) that Europe could be at stake now. I don’t actually think there has been a better time for Russia to prod a member of the Article 5 club than at present, to be honest. Depends on whether they fancy giving a good non-nuclear go at the other 31 NATO countries or pressing the big red button, of course.

Especially as that new Baltic electricity link goes directly through the Suwałki Gap.

2 dictators thinking they can split europe between themselves.

    19. when someone is pushed against the wall, things can really escalate. Talking about UA, it is an existential issue, they restrain the action on their territory however it may as well move to Moscow and other big cities.

    20. toniyevych on

According to the recent research made by Kiel Institute for the World Economics (https://www.ifw-kiel.de/topics/war-against-ukraine/ukraine-support-tracker/) as of October 31, 2024, the EU has provided 124.7 billion dollars of aid (+14.75 from UK), which is much higher than the US (88.3).

Then the US is threatening the EU with new tariffs, urging it to increase the military spending (aka “buy more American weapons”), and then is trying to exclude the EU and Ukraine from negotiations?

It looks ugly, to be honest.

    21. WonderfulHat5297 on

Wouldnt a deal between US and Russia without Ukraine just be exactly that? Surely the actual belligerents have to agree to a deal before peace is made

    22. He will discusse the capitulation of Ukraine, military favouring Putin, economicaly favouring Trump.

The USA is not to be trusted and definitively not an ally ,while Trump is disgusting person just as Putin.

I hope Europe finally stop to buy USA weapons and beending the knee.

    23. Silent-Ad-756 on

Should change that to say Europe is cut out of negotiations.

US no longer an ally. And likely a threat. Time to tool up Europeans, and dig in.

We have a pincer dismantling of democracy from two sides now. Cronies and stooges to the East and the West.

If Europe goes fascist too (looking at you Germany with your current right-wing woes), there will be a right royal rumble as the fascists decide who the new enemy is when everybody else has gone fascist too.

Amazing what an economic system based upon funny money, greed, self-interest and inequality will do to a population. Nobody has any principles, just self-interested ideology.

    24. Xtiqlapice on

Europe should and needs to continue to supply Ukraine. The orange bastard is probably going to strike a deal with Putin that only benefits himself and his cronies. They’re going to take a shit in Ukraine’s face, and europe needs to get its shit together. This is a disrespect for all the people who have Lost their lives these past 3 years.

Giving away something that is not yours is just as bad as taking something that is not yours. Ukraine should not give in to either of these idiots.

How does that even work? The country being invaded sorta NEEDS to be there for negotiations, right?

I was worried we Trump was going to give a Munich Conference 2.0 and the signs are that I was right. I can barely describe the level of hatred I feel for Trump. The stupid, ignorant orange bastard is doing exactly what Putin wants him to do. We’re in the shit timeline, Trump’s accelerating the fall of America as a superpower.

Europe better the step the fuck up and get ready to defend itself alone.

I feel similar anger towards Biden and the EU leaders, if they hadn’t of pussy footed around for the last 3 years and gave Ukraine sufficient and timely support, the war would be over by now and we wouldn’t be in this situation.

I don’t know… I hope Ukraine has a some secret nukes or can get its hands on some.
