For those who think turf cutting is a harmless, local tradition:
*Peatlands occupy just 3% of all land, but contain more carbon than all of the world’s forests. However, farmers and miners are draining the peatlands, releasing so much CO2 that if they were a country, they would be the fourth biggest polluter in the world after China, the US and India.*

Ara but wouldn’t it be a tragedy to lose the ancient tradition of making everything stink like a burning bin bag and the annual Flooding Of The Villages.
I read this study yesterday, and the tragic thing is it seems like we are fucked either way. Even if we entirely stop mechanically disturbing wetlands, they are degrading anyway at an alarming rate due to overall climate change.
Warmer temperatures, drier climate conditions, permafrost thaw, and fire are all leading to carbon release regardless if we touch them or not. It just seems like another one of those things we have likely fucked beyond repair.
Yes, its a terrible crime to burn peat but it’s ok to import peat briquettes from other countries at exorbitant cost and then burn it.
