Britain has started supplying Ukraine with surface-to-air missiles that can be launched from shipping containers.

The new missile defence system, named Gravehawk, converts Soviet-era weapons into ground-based air defences.

It disguises Cold War-era Vympel R-73 missiles, originally designed for Soviet fighter jets, inside standard shipping containers that can be covertly transported by lorries.

Jimmy Rushton, a Kyiv-based foreign policy and security analyst, said it would cause confusion on the battlefield for the Russian army.

“Russia has to contend with a scenario where any shipping container in Ukraine – and there are tens of thousands – could potentially be concealing one of these systems,” he said.

He added: “That’s also why we got a very detailed look at this system; the MoD were generous with media access compared with similar systems in the past.”

The Gravehawk system allows air-to-air missiles to be deployed as ground-based defences and will enable Ukraine to deploy its stockpile of Vympel missiles, boosting Kyiv’s capabilities without needing new missile production or complex logistics.

where would they be put in for transport, if not in shipping containers?

you can place empty containers all over the place in plain sight. Russia will waste lots of boms on empty containers and will never know what container is a threat to their aviation and what are dummies.

Only to find out when it is too late.

Said if before and I’ll say it again – we may not make the best weapons in the world – be we are fuckin shit hot at naming them.

I know the UK isn’t the most popular country in Europe and I’ve been pretty disappointed with what’s happened over the last few years, but I think when it comes to Ukraine we’ve always stood tall.

Probably need to paint them with Evergreen or Maersk logos if they intend for them to blend in

It’s going to be extremely interesting to see what the future German government will do with regard to Ukraine, seeing how both the UK and France are going in the offensive (or doubling down). It’s going to be a conservative one after next week’s elections, most likely, and while the conservatives caused much of the current mess, they did try to get Taurus shipments through the Bundestag. But they’re anything if not unprincipled opportunists, so we might get to see a really hawkish German chancellor who gets Taurus on the way right after taking office, or worse appeasement and a revival of the Merkel era stagnation.

Stop this bullshit “hidden inside shipping container” !

It is inside one because those come in standard dimensions (namely width and height) and can be easy to transport (especially one over the other).

It isn’t “hidden” inside a shipping container. Fucking hell, how stupid are people writing these articles (and those who parrot them) ???

They’re not “hidden” inside shipping containers. It just makes the logistics easier if they fit on any lorry/truck.
