Good, shame tax payer money had to be wasted on this

Can someone who knows more about this stuff explain this? How can we reject asylum, but also agree it’s not safe for them to go home.

Ireland removed birthright citizenship after that Chinese woman abused it by having an anchor baby in Northern Ireland on a UK student visa. It just makes more sense to at least require naturalised citizenship.
Birth right citizenship was ended because of perceived abuse including by UK asylum seekers who moved within the UK to Northern Ireland, then had a baby, which under the good Friday agreement became a citizen of Ireland. Birthright citizenship for anyone born on the island of Ireland only existed legally from 1999.
Now at least one parent must be an Irish citizen for the baby to be granted Irish citizenship.
We had a referendum on this in 2004, the 27th amendment of the constitution I think. There’s an article on Wikipedia.
