NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Saturday offered some blunt advice to European members of the military alliance: stop complaining and present solutions.

“Get into the debate, not by complaining …. but by coming up with concrete ideas,” he told the Munich Security Conference.

We really need that “stop talking, start acting” mindset right now more then ever before!

Didn’t they just said that the enemy is on their knees without resources and that the leader will die because of health problems in 4 days? This was months ago. Make up your mind

    4. Other_Class1906 on

It’s not really “being sidelined” and more “back-stabbed” though admittedly everyone saw it coming but wanted to know if it would really happen. But he is right, Europe is far away from being a spectator and Europe shouldn’t act like they are NPCs in this while the others are creating facts.

    5. IssuePsychological78 on

Rutte, you are hyprocite. What did your country do in the last years regarding NATO spending?

    6. Acrobatic_Morning17 on

That’s what we get for hopping in the NATO bandwagon instead of developing our own structures. NATO is very much american muscle.

    7. St3fano_ on

This slimy bastard has the balls to call for increased spending after being an austerity hawk for more than a decade without the slightest apology for crippling the European economy. They already ruined the European living standards, good luck asking for even more

Again, I like to mention that in his 13 years of being prime minister of the Netherlands, Rutte never managed to reach the 2% NATO target. He cut so hard on defense, that our soldiers had to yell [BANG BANG](https://www.forcesnews.com/services/tri-service/bang-bang-dutch-army-reduced-yelling-gun-sounds) during *shooting* drills. Our current military is in shambles, due to 30 years of defense cuts. Thirteen of those years – almost half – were under Rutte’s own watch.

Rutte also always rejected a European defense strategy, and rather relied on US protection for our own security.

He was also fiercely anti-EU for most of his prime ministership, until he finally realized we can’t do without it. But it took years for him to finally get it. He fed the anti-EU sentiment in the Netherlands for years, and Wilders is still picking the fruits of that.

I agree that we should stop talking, and finally start *doing* something, but Rutte himself is one of the main reasons we didn’t do enough sooner, and that we are now in deep shit. He belongs to the old guard of politicians who stood and still stand in the way of actual progress.

Rutte was always part of the problem. He’s not calling for European independence here, he’s just demanding we pay Trump’s extortionate demands.

Yes Europeans need to start coming up with solutions: *Our* solutions, neither the Kremlin’s nor Mar-a-Lago’s.

    10. The militairy industrial complex demands more spending, while also surrendering parts of Ukraine. Like a lose/lose situation, why isnt everyone thrilled?

Lmao he is America’s bitch. 0 autonomy or leadership, he just takes orders from Trump

    12. Dazzling-Grass-2595 on

Talk about jumping the shark, who is complaing? Europe is and never will be a one person show.

    13. atnight_owl on

Yeah, that’s right, he’s not wrong, but you see… we got into this mess a long time ago, and this is not a new problem. So let’s see how **Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s** government performed when it comes to military and defense spending.

As far as I know, his government was guilty of harming EU with populist agendas, such as blocking Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to **Schengen**.

this guy is getting old fast, he was chosen because is a Trump friend and literally does nothing just capitulate

Sucking up to Trump by paraphrasing their message from earlier. Fucking hell, what a spineless twat. Concrete ideas do sod all if you are not already on the table deal is being discussed on ffs.

    16. BelgianPolitics on

This really seems to confuse some people but obviously he will make these comments.

He is the Secretary General of NATO. He protects NATO’s interest and thus the United States’ interest. That’s his job. People still view his comments through a “EU leader” lens but **he is no longer associated with the EU or The Netherlands**. He is paid to be pro-NATO, pro-US and anti any sort of European army or European NATO equivalent.

He is a civil servant employed by NATO. Not a political leader. Not an EU leader.

    17. Mr_barba97 on

Why would I spend more for nato at this point? Just get out of NATO and let us do it for ourselves. USA is not useless but an hindrance on our efforts

    18. wabashcanonball on

Exactly, do something more than issue sternly worded statements.

    19. Mephzice on

Doubt spending target increase, Germany has for example already said they barely meet the current one. It was the interview with Olaf Scholz that they basically only meet 2% temporarily and need to find a solution in a few years

    20. ChocolateLabOwner on

Unbelieveable. This idiot did everything in his power to destroy our armed forces to the point they litteraly had to yell pang on excercises. Units had to order fuel one month in advance for displacements…they didn’t even had fucking fuel on stock. Even in 2022, our entire stock of munitions was good for one (1) afternoon of warfare.

JFC, even in May 1940 we were better prepared….

    21. KernunQc7 on

We can do both Rutte. And why would RO not complain about being sidelined? We were not invited, yet you expect us to be your human shield. Not happening.

Next year, Trump will have laid enough groundwork to pull out of NATO entierely. The spending targets achieved or not ( lets be real, no one will be spending 5% as the US says ) are irrelevant.

Also last year we donate 1 bil worth of Patriot battery to UA, only Norway has pledged 150m to help us buy a new one after 6 months. Otherwise complete silence. So we know how much western pledges are worth.

    22. Cybernaut-Neko on

Rutte sits on top of a lot of US gear, because they believed the US would be our buddy forever of course he want us to stop complaining. ( And buy more from lockheed etc… )

    23. Divinate_ME on

We don’t even have the money to afford proper infrastructure ffs. Do you think that stuff grows on trees?

    24. TheTanadu on

Time to US get sidelined and EU should get some investments.

    25. silverionmox on

Spending targets are just performative actions to prove to Uncle Sam that you’re a good boy, so they’ll intervene to bail you out of trouble. But Uncle Sam is getting a bit loopy lately, and Trump already even moved the spending targets arbitrarily from 2% to 5%, a number that even the US with 3,4% doesn’t reach.

Let’s not pretend that chasing this moving goalpost will ever make things go back to what they were: the Trumpian US has decided it doesn’t need allies, and all the blahblahblah about spending targets is just to create an excuse to quit NATO, or worse, refuse to honor its obligations in time of need.

So we should act as if we’re on our own from now on, and if it turns out that the US comes to their senses after the next election, all the better. But let’s not rely on wishful thinking.

    26. icwhatudidthr on

How about ditching NATO and creating a federated European Army instead?

What’s the point of NATO for Europe if USA collaboration is missing?

    27. TheLightDances on

There is no point in complaining. Rather, we simply need to continue to assert the obvious truth: Trump’s “peace plan” is a complete fiction and any “negotiations” without Ukraine and the EU are meaningless. Being “sidelined” is like not being a part of some elaborate fanfiction Trump and Putin are working on.

All this talk of “sidelining” or “humiliation” and whatever else is only as real as you believe it to be, and no one should believe any of it. All the humiliation for Trump, who pretends he can make a deals (or frankly, a ludocrious plan for capitulation) for another country and the whole of Europe while at the same time demanding that country to give up its wealth in exchange for nothing, and telling Europe that USA is leaving.
