She is speaking the truth. Why are only a few EU leaders invited? How do you expect to promote European unity and create a joint army if you are excluding most of the countries in important meetings?

    2. azery2001 on

yeah that’s fair criticism. at least one or more from central europe should’ve been invited

    3. Cyclist83 on

That’s how politics works on a large scale. The USA has recently changed its strategy and you have to react quickly. You can’t decide anything quickly and you’ll never get a result if you invite all 27 members of the EU to the table.
The first talks will be held by the states that will ultimately contribute the most to Europe’s security due to their size. In further rounds of talks, everyone else will be brought to the table. This has always been the case and is nothing unusual.

    4. RoyalLurker on

Do not start to split already. We will get through if we stay united.

    5. saturdaybinge on

Yeah, I was thinking about the same thing regarding Romania. War at its border, drones occasionally crashing onto its territory, Moldova as a potential next target, and the “unified response” excludes it.

We’re either all united or we’re not. There’s no room for “big players” and “small players”, especially in these circumstances

    6. I understand that the co-operation in nominally based on the Weimar Triangle (France, Germany and Poland), but the expansion to include Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the European Commission as “Weimar+” is barely a week-old development. In addition, the PM of Denmark will be attending and also representing the Nordic-Baltic Eight (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden). Le Monde apparently claims that the European Council will also be represented along with NATO.

    7. Repulsive_Durian_7 on

Countries that were present according to the article:

France, Germany, UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, Netherlands and Denmark. Von der Leyen and Antonio Costa as EU representatives and Mark Rutte as NATO representative were also present.

Edit: apparently Denmark was also representing Scandinavia and Baltic countries

Do they really have to bicker in a situation as volatile as the current geopolitical one? It’s not that they wanted to be disrespectful they have to be fast now after the US fell into russian hands…

    9. memory_mixture106 on

It’s much more difficult to arrange and have a productive emergency meeting with all european countries than it is to have a productive emergency meeting with the countries that will be the most key parts of any response. Key words: productive and emergency.

    10. Dave_Is_Useless on

Ok I am sorry but why is Denmark invited and not Sweden like come on our arms industry is enormous compared to theirs. And no I am definitely not just salty that Denmark is invited and not Sweden.

Edit: I thought the last sentence would make this comment pretty obvious sarcasm but apparently not.

    11. ExtremeOccident on

These aren’t EU talks – they’re meetings between the main European countries that are helping Ukraine, with some countries like Denmark and Poland representing their regions. The UK is there too, which clearly shows these aren’t just EU countries meeting.

    12. LiebesNektar on

Bullshit, everyone in EU is represented by VdL. Invited are: France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark (for all Nordics), the European Union and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Makes sense to first try to coordinate something with the big militaries?? Imagine having 30 people sitting there.

EDIT: I think Netherlands is only there because the German military and theirs is basically one now.

    13. FelizIntrovertido on

This is not new. There’s even a coalition with the naming PEPSI (Petits Pays Sans Importance, small irrelevant countries).
In the end it can be really powerful.

I don’t think today’s meeting is about an EU army (why there Rutte or Starmer?). I guess they’re doing the homework of troops to prepare for Ukraine. Trump wants it for tomorrow.

Yes, for the US, all EU members are PEPSI

Index really likes being both inflammatory and poorly informed.

    15. MeMyselfAnd1234 on

this is one of the points that the far-right is exploiting in the east of Europe and it is working because people like Macron helps this rhetoric

    16. lars_rosenberg on

No offense to the Slovenian president, but the only Slovenian that may be politically relevant in the current situation is Melania Trump.

    17. darealmoneyboy on

yes thats just how it work in the world. youre bigger = you get more to say. it is no secret that Germany and France “lead” the EU. You think anyone cares about Austria with its 9 million inhabitants? if it werent for the UN in Vienna nobody would give a damn.

instead of moaning and critisizing we would be well advised to concentrate on what we have in common: the strive for peace, propserity and unity. that would of course include at least taking other stances into consideration, especially if theres war on some countries’ borders

    18. KernunQc7 on

A union of equals, but some are more equal than others. And more imperialist too.

Old habits die hard, WE shouldn’t pretend that they changed. The old colonial powers still think the same way as when they still had colonies.

edit. r/Europe really doesn’t like it when the small countries speak up.

    19. LeCafeClopeCaca on

The Russian and Americans troll farms are working overtime jeez, I hope a good chunk of comments are from younger people at least because the reactions are rather stupidly divisive.

It’s not like it was announced and done in two days, not a lot of time to prepare a 27 nations summit guys

    20. gunnerfitzy on

The more people there, the less likely there will be any significant agreement.

Finding unanimity amongst 27 countries has made the EU far too slow to react to this very dynamic situation.

Speed has never been more important than right now.

I’m perfectly fine with our Irish PM not being there. Thoughts and prayers aren’t much good here.

    21. Hot-Measurement5070 on

In Romania Nicusor Dan,current mayor of Bucharest and candidate for the presidency, said that our current president (until the elections in may) Ilie Bolojan and our minister of foreign affairs should try to get a seat along with the other European countries at Paris. This isn’t going to happen, but this meeting can only increase Euroscepticism in Europe.I myself think that Romania, sharing a pretty big border with Ukraine, and having minorities in Cernăuți (today Ukraine),plus all the problems with drone attack at the Danube delta, that affected Tulcea county, should have been at least some reasons to invite Romania, plus the biggest airforce NATO base in construction at Kogălniceanu and that the Ukrainian economy is helped a lot by the trade routes through Romania.

    22. ProductGuy48 on

I mean I get the need for the meeting but the optics are not great and she is right on that point. How can you criticise the US negotiating over Ukraines head and then you adopt a similar position with respect to the smaller EU countries. It reeks of hypocrisy.

But even putting that behind us, as I don’t really care that much about the optics, what is really infuriating is that they haven’t even invited Kaja Kallas who is supposed to be the EU Foreign Relations High Commissioner and would have been an adequate representative for everyone else. That would have been appropriate and more than enough as far as I am concerned.

    23. amiautisticmaybe on

Bloody hell calm down. There’s no point inviting the smaller militaries if the big ones don’t agree. Got to make sure all the big ones will join first else there’s no point is there. You’ll get invited later. Also the leader of the eu and eu secretary are there to represent the rest for now which is something you all agreed to when joining the Eu anyway

    24. DABOSSROSS9 on

Its weird how some of you so easily justify this while criticizing the US for meeting with Putin without EU.

    25. sokorsognarf on

This is such a petulant response from the Slovenian president. Her beautiful but tiny country isn’t really relevant in any way to this situation or to its resolution

    26. toolkitxx on

For those actually interested in understanding why some meetings are not involving everyone from the get-go:

Go to the [SIPRI ](https://www.sipri.org/visualizations/2024/sipri-top-100-arms-producing-and-military-services-companies-world-2023)site and have a good look at the countries in the EU that actually have some form noteworthy industry related to military production. This is one key factor in many of those talks but doesnt mean that others are ignored – they are just not as relevant at those stages of talks.

    27. john516100 on

I know this is not a “EU thing” but c’mon, the anti-EU propaganda used by the populists in Romania – which fuckin borders Ukraine! – basically writes itself!

    28. Orloff123 on

Cmon Nataša, you really expected Macron to listen to you confirming target of 2% defense spending till 2030? What do you have to offer in current situation?

    29. id say she has a fair point.

would not have taken much to send them an invite.

    30. Decebalus_Bombadil on

Macron fucks up even when he tries to do something good. Everybody should have been invited at least for the optics. Snubbing some countries give the ammo to the ruzzian propaganda that paints western europe as imperialists who exploit eastern europe.

    31. Glass-News-9184 on

1.29% of GDP was Slovenia’s military expenditure in 2024. 1.29%.

    32. Borrowed-Time-1981 on

Classic Macronic contempt for small players.

Slovenia gave 30 tanks, 38 IFV, 46 APC, 16 howitzers, 200 AA guns.

That’s enormous for such a small country.

    33. mabiturm on

Maybe they should have been more supportive to ukraine in the past 3 years.

    34. Former_Exchange_2585 on

When i also read the comments here im kinda giving up that the project EU has a future…Even in critical times like this the EU nations are spiting on each other, too much nationalism and “we are better than you mentality”.

Also what Macron did is so counterproductive, that it leads to EXACTLY THIS.

Russia and US will use this as propaganda and the rights are rising again.

    35. _melancholymind_ on

Even though my country was invited, I fully do agree with this. It’s European Union. Everybody should be invited, as long as they support European values. Ex-Eastern Bloc countries should be definitely present…
