It’s going to be hilarious if 210B of that sum is coming from Putin’s frozen cash pile
It’s not sending €700bn to Ukraine : Europe is going to effectively reboot its entire military structure across the board, redirecting a massive investment to domestically produced weapons, vehicles, aircraft, ammunition, etc.
A large chunk of the initial output will go to Ukraine, undoubtedly, but the overall €700bn figure is for the rebuilding of the European arms industry.
Needless to say, this also involves the surgical removal of all US input into that industry. No-one is going to trust weapons into which the US has *any* input or control, as they have already demonstrated that they will refuse permission for their use.
The US just lost a staggering amount of money, and in the long run Europe will not be selling weapons who don’t trust the US, further displacing US military sales and influence.
It’s good, but they could/should have done this 2 years ago. Wait to see how Trump reacts, i would not put it past that criminal to sell US weapons to the Russians if he thought he could profit from it.
Ukraine needs urgent help right now. Future plans mean little if the defenders don’t survive the night. You and I don’t have to wait for the EU or the US or any other entity that could end Putin, but doesn’t. This is not Ukraine aid, it’s a massive injection into our defense industry which in turn allows us to provide more aid, while also arming ourselves. And selling arms to help fund the European MIC.
This is an emergency. The Americans cannot be trusted, we must assume they would never honor Article 5, so we must assume Europe stands alone.
Canada is free to stay and we should give them nukes as part of a nuclear sharing program, in case the US invades. Reason: we can’t defend them as my other way from a US invasion.
If you’re American and flabbergasted reading this.. yes, your president has completely destroyed all faith in America in less than 1 month. Europe no longer believes you will honour treaties. **Your president likes Putin and Xi and hates us, your oldest and biggest allies that bled with you in the GWOT after YOU invoked Article 5. Let that sink in.**
