Absolutely no way Martin will say anything negative to Trump. None.

      Spicer is a spineless lickspittle.

He spent six months sucking Trump’s cock during the first term, then after he was fired, he wrote a book and came over here thinking that his, “My grandad was Irish” routine would be well received.

There was tumbleweed when he went on the Late Late.

I’d be surprised if Trump even comes out and talks to MM during the visit. He might appear for a quick photo OP, or send Musk out to prattle on about tech companies.

MM won’t even get a chance to talk to Trump about anything substantial. Not that it would make a difference.

    3. Honestly it’s bat shit crazy regardless. Trump will probably ask us to the 51st state and not invite us next year anyways when we say no.

I could see this year, Trump not being there or him sending some senator instead. Our relationship with America is changing, same as everyone else. We shouldn’t end it but honestly feels unsustainable with the way things are going, unless we’re actively agreeing to everything he says and sucking up to Trump. It’ll probably be ended.

The implication there is that Trump may still be in the White House 4 years later. Otherwise the tradition could just resume when he’s gone. And it’s not like he’ll do anything for Ireland anyway.

Enda Kenny’s speech underlining the value of immigration in 2017 was seen (and praised in the US) as implicit criticism of Trump’s policies at the time.

So it _is_ possible to be seen as being critical without openly lecturing or damaging the longstanding tradition.

I’d rather see MM shove the shamrock up his own hole than give it on bended knee to kiss the diapered arse of Donald trump

Ireland has zero influence on the world stage even though it likes to think it does. MM would be very  foolish to say or criticise Trump. People don’t realize that the Republican party has ireland in its cross hairs. It would be short sighted and foolish in fact I don’t even think Trump will want to meet MM. It will be JD vance or someone else

The art of diplomacy , a subtle manoeuvring of one’s foe to a more advantageous position, although an odious individual, the links forged between the two nations must be maintained and cultivated irregardless of the incumbents

Classic free speech absolutism until they don’t like what you have to say from Trump’s crowd.

Like anyone gives a shit what this clod has to say. Average reddit user has more insight and access than him

As much of an absolute clown Spicer is, he’s not wrong here. I’d like to think that Michael Martin is smart enough not to engage in BS virtue signalling that might cause the orange fool in the White House to do anything rash that could have serious long term consequences for Ireland.

He’s dead right, option 4. Make it so that if trump does do anything it makes him look really bad.

We have zero influence on Gaza. Obviously the majority of Irish people have strong feelings regarding the situation there but that doesn’t mean we should spite our own interests. Ultimately the wellbeing of Ireland should be the Taoiseachs priority and he should be doing everything to maintain that relationship we have with the US

You don’t throw shit at the person who feeds you.

People do not realise how f**ked Ireland is without America…

The way things are going I’d say that sewer rat McGregor will be there in the room aswell.

This is one MM would be best to avoid. A very precarious situation I feel is being set up here. Bibi was probably musing about Ireland being hostile to Israel not long ago aswell.

Avoiding is easier said than done though, that’s for sure. It wouldn’t go unnoticed. I don’t envy Martins position here, I really don’t.

Sean Spicer is not the person you should be listening to on anything

    18. justsayinbtw on

He is right. The Americans made their choice, so what difference will a sermon from us make.

    19. footie3000 on

To be honest, I think he should just go over and celebrate the day, and the relationship between the countries. We can continue to display our support for both Gaza and Ukraine, and strengthen that support in the face of the American government’s displeasure, which in my opinion is a far more worthwhile endeavour then refusing to visit, or doing a JD Vance and insulting the government and the country

    20. Additional-Sock8980 on

      He is dead right.

DT wouldn’t care. The job on the day is to build report. Be rude to the guy and he’ll look for a way to pull all FDI and more importantly, the Irish hire more Americans in America than the Americans employ here.

    21. dconnorp on

I have more credibility than Sean Spicer to speak on this topic. I know the man wore an Easter Bunny suit at the White House once or twice but what a complete waste of time having this chode on to discuss this topic.

    22. lovinglyquick on

Trump is dangerously mercurial and Ireland is trying to navigate choppy political waters at the moment. It would be insane to think MM should this moment to scold the man, especially when it would be nothing more than posturing anyway.

    23. perplexedtv on

Infantilising rubbish. ‘sure aren’t ye great little leprechauns, the whole guvirmint of amerikay is out for lunch’

    24. Who gives even the slightest bit of a fuck what Sean Spicer says, that lying, facetious, shitstain of a human being.

    25. ProbablyCarl on

Spicer is a spanner but he’s also right. If Trump came over here and told us to stop supporting Gaza we would tell him to get stuffed so why would we expect any different. MM needs to be diplomatic, that’s the job.
