You killed it? WtF. Could have been a European hornet or a wasp queen. Difficult to tell from the pictures. Next time, plastic cup, trap it, and cardboard underneath and set it free
Looks like a European hornet. Its actually a very useful species (e.g. hunts wasps) and its protected.
yeah looks like a hornet. take a look at the outside of your windows and make sure that there is no nest… will get uncomfortable once you have a whole regiment of them buzzing around
No, that’s our regular native hornet. It’s a queen though, these are bigger than normal workers. They are currently flying and trying to find a good spot for this year’s nest.
