Nobody can help nuclear energy today since the big variety of renewable sources, especially solar, wind and geothermal have become so cheap. And additionally they use no fuel, have no waste from fuel and are much quicker to deploy as they scale a lot better.

    2. TomTebetobsi on

No. There is literally no company that wants to build a new power plant, all the old reactors are non functional.
Edit: No company that wants to build in Germany for Germany

I’ll never get this stupid discussion.

      • Renewables make up >90% of global power additions already and still growing fast
      • Battery tech is growing exponentially and the industry is scaling up way faster than Nuclear

Yes, you can spend $50 billion on a new Nuclear Power Plant like Poland, which is going to go online in 2032 or later (with like 1GW – 3GW on new electricity, wow) or take this shitload amount of money and invest in your local green tech industry – you know, an industry that’s actually viable for the future and has synergy effects with the european car industry and all the other stuff that we electrifiy.

To me, it’s all about the opportunity costs.

God, I’m getting tired of hearing this. Let’s centralize our energy production on a few incredible expensive power plants rather than hundreds of small ones, so it’s easier for Putin to destroy them in a case of war. People are so fucking stupid.

Stupid journalists keep putting this kind of pictures in when they want to illustrate nuclear power plants. But these are just cooling towers and pure water steam comes out of them. Most of the used water is recycled by them so where you see these towers that is a good sign because these power plant is more environment friendly than others. These cooling towers are used with every kind of power plant that uses heat not only the nuclear power plant.

quite frankly the main argument to go nuclear is to go NUCLEAR. Trump has us nearly there, not gonna lie, but nuclear energy will be just the official argument, not the actual strategic reason

    7. Cold_Navy79 on

Awesome! CLEAN nuclear energy will make it so Germany can be energy independent and NOT buy gas from Russia.

I’m a fan of nuclear power, but here in the UK our current plant construction cost has gone from crazy (£18B) to astronomical(£35B). It’s really hard to say if they will ever provide value for money, and that’s before we consider the clean up costs of when the plants have run thier course.

Our sellafield nuclear site could cost £135,000,000,000 before it’s finished being cleaned up.

      It’s hard to justify.

    9. I wonder if the Germans succeed at stopping the unstoppable solar/wind train a second time. I would just wait for fusion reactors.

Although Merz said that he would dismantle wind turbines because they are ugly. I’d say he can’t be that stupid but many politicians proved me wrong on this assumption in the last decade so I don’t know?

    10. BidnyZolnierzLonda on

Why would it? It was CDU that did shut down nuclear plants

    11. medievalvelocipede on

Germany, you’re going to have to rethink nuclear power AND nuclear weapons.

For the people that think nuclear is not worth it : [https://www.reddit.com/r/nuclear/comments/1ix0xbm/edf_posts_114_billion_record_profit_for_2024/](https://www.reddit.com/r/nuclear/comments/1ix0xbm/edf_posts_114_billion_record_profit_for_2024/)

And for those that think that it produce a lot of co2 :

(It’s in french but it’s worth reading, using deepl should be enough, and yeah before you ask even one of the agency which is against nuclear in France ended with similar results)

It’s a pipe dream. No private company will want to run them, no insurance will want to insure them and no private bank is mad enough to finance nuclear reactors.
And as soon as the electorate realises that they’ll have pay massively to get more expensive electricity in 15-20 years they won’t vote for it.

    14. From what I know he just wants to take a look into it again, but made no hard promises of going nuclear. There is no company that wants to run a nuclear power plant in germany anyways.

But as he‘s much more friendly towards nuclear energy, there should be less opposition in the eu towards it now.

    15. NoGravitasForSure on

Nuclear energy is dead in Germany and even Merz won’t resurrect it. The reasons are not only ideological but also economical. Renewables are way cheaper and the transition of the grid towards renewables has already progressed too far. Reversing this makes no sense.

Proponents of nuclear energy often point at the relatively high prices for electricity in Germany. But only 30-40% of what consumers pay goes into electricity generation. The rest are transmission fees and taxes which won’t decrease with the return to nuclear energy.

    16. AdminEating_Dragon on

How about Germany starting a nuclear weapons program as well?

It would send quite the message to the USA and Russia.

    17. FelizIntrovertido on

Well, Spain is the socialist anti-nuclear exception. Please help us with that!!

    18. Drroringtons on

Aren’t they forming a coalition with SPD, the folks who got voted out due to their shit policies?

      Doubt anything will change.

    19. foldinger on

Germany has no nuclear energy anymore. France is big in nuclear energy, they need it for nuclear weapons too.

    20. Sarcastic-Potato on

I’m personally not against nuclear power, there is definitely a use case for it, however pushing for it in Germany right now is just stupid. The old ones don’t work anymore, no company in Germany wants to build new ones and even then a new one takes like 15 to 20 years to build.

Renewables are cheaper and faster to. Build and Germany needs cheaper electricity like yesterday

    21. What a bullshit claim.
Germany isn’t going back to nuclear.
