      Arguably the most important foreign policy task of Merz is to fix the Franco-German alliance that suffered quite a bit under Scholz.

      This is the foundation for a unified European approach, especially in regards to defence. Getting the Brits on board will also help, but first fix the foundation of ANY progress in Europe.

      For some strange reason, CDU chancellors tend to get along better with French presidents, exceptions like Helmut Schmidt notwithstanding….

      At this point, as an Italian, any diatribe with the French is over for me, if I have to be led by them and not the Americans then I’m in.

      People should really wait until Merz is chancellor.

      I predict that the big speeches and promises will soon play a much smaller role. And Merz will certainly not hold back on issues where he believes that German interests must be protected. Our European partners could already see a glimpse of this during the election campaign when Merz called for permanent border controls, contrary to Schengen rules. This is unlikely to please our immediate neighbors.

      It shouldn’t be complicated to add Spain and Poland to the team for a really ambitious EU Army. I don’t think Italy will join with the actual government, unfortunatelly.

      Schuldbremse out, french exceptionalism out… Let’s make some god damn european weapons. German panzers, french nukes, swedish artillery, finnish shells, italian choppers etc. We all make something well… Let’s just make a metric shitload of it and take care of our own destiny as a team.

      For once, both left and right should be able to agree “yankee go home!”.
