      Prominent bits:

      > Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz has opened talks with the Social Democrats to quickly approve as much as €200 billion ($210 billion) in special defense spending, according to a person familiar with those discussions.

      > Merz has been promising to ramp up investment in the German military to counter Russian aggression but his plans have run into trouble after fringe parties secured a blocking minority in the next Parliament. With less than two thirds of the seats, the mainstream parties don’t have the votes to ease the constitutional limits on government borrowing. But they could get around that by pushing through a vote before the new legislature sits for the first time on March 24.

      > The winner of Sunday’s election is under pressure to move quickly on defense with the rest of the European Union scrambling to respond to Donald Trump’s determination to force a quick settlement to the war in Ukraine.

      > Merz said he is due to have a call with SPD leader Lars Klingbeil later on Monday. Klingbeil’s party colleague, Olaf Scholz, the outgoing chancellor, also raised the possibility of recalling parliament for an emergency session, telling reporters on Monday that a similar move had occurred in 1998, when Germany had to make decisions with regard to the war in former Yugoslavia.

      > “It’s a rare occurrence for parliament to reconvene — but it wouldn’t be the very first time it’s happened,” Scholz said.

      > The proposal was publicly put forward by Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck from the Greens and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock at a press conference in Berlin Monday. Habeck, who is also economy minister, said that it was now up to Merz to make the decision.

      > French President Emmanuel Macron is in Washington Monday and plans to push Trump to offer US air support for European efforts to backstop Ukraine following any deal. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will fly to the US later this week and EU leaders will meet in Brussels March 6 to discuss their next steps.

Also floated the idea of inviting and giving a safe state reception to someone who’s currently having an international warrant for arrest for war crimes and crimes against humanity, who’s representative recently voted in the UN in favor of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He also cooperated with the far-right AfD. The guy is a fuck joke. He probably masturbates in his private airplane to news about the shit Donald Trump got away with.

Our European military-industrial complex is going to boom for years. All that money will create jobs and fund tons of R&D, to the benefit of our economies, while we gain credible hard power to deter any adversary or bully.

If you didn’t know better, you’d actually have to thank Trump-USA for this own goal. And Russia thought that it was going to weaken Europe by driving a wedge into the transatlantic alliance, while eventually, it will have a much stronger and hostile European neighbour, armed to the teeth and able to neutralise any threat.

Self-defense is long overdue, nobody was prepared for the US to suddenly chicken out.

An additional $200 billion would be viable for serious rearmament.

That could buy so much equipment, tbh

We Americans see all these people for exactly who they are. They made us work too much so we tuned out to have a life. The news was too divided, etc. We are slowly waking up and you’ll see big changes and protests nationwide in the coming weeks. They’re losing political capital at the fastest rate in American history. Have faith, please. 🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦

    7. He is mostly rushing as the next parliament would have the opposition (Linke/AfD) large enough to block any constitutional amendments, and both are parties that the CDU explicitly isn’t cooperating with.

But I still find it funny that the first move of the incoming government is to try and pass something in the old parliament as the new parliament doesn’t give their side enough votes.
