La dodicenne Arina ha scavato attraverso le macerie per salvare suo padre e suo fratello dopo uno sciopero russo. Purtroppo, suo fratello Denys è morto due giorni dopo …
12-Year-Old Arina Zhurba from Sumy Rescued Herself and Tried to Save Her Family After a Russian “Shahed” Drone Hit Their Home.
The family lived on the sixth floor of an apartment building.
“I was walking from the kitchen and told my brother, ‘Let’s go to sleep.’ He said, ‘I’ll be there soon.’ I lay down—one minute, and that was it. I heard the ‘Shahed’ approaching. It flew for four seconds, then there was a loud crash. I opened my eyes but couldn’t see anything—it was very dark and full of dust.”
Trapped Under the Rubble
“My legs were pinned down badly. There were wooden slats from my bunk bed on them. The entire bed collapsed on me, along with a wardrobe and heavy debris. I managed to get out from under the debris first, then crawled out from under the bed.”
As soon as she freed herself, she immediately started looking for her father and brother, who were also in the apartment.
“When I got out, I crawled straight to my dad. He was in the bedroom. He was completely buried. There was a sheer drop where the floor had collapsed. I climbed out, called for help, called for my dad. I couldn’t hear him. I climbed over the rubble and started digging him out—I uncovered his head, and he regained consciousness,” Arina recounts.
Her older brother, Denys, was also trapped under the rubble.
“Then I climbed over the debris to my brother. When I reached him, I saw he was unconscious, groaning, struggling to breathe. I uncovered his face so he could breathe, but I couldn’t do more—the debris was too heavy. Then the emergency services arrived. I told them my dad and brother were inside. They led me out, and neighbors from apartment 103 took me in until my relatives arrived. I saw people outside, shining flashlights.”
On February 2, Denys died from his injuries in the hospital.
Arina you should be proud of what you did to help your dad and brother! And remember that your brother, even though he didn’t make it days later, he would have been so grateful to have you (family) being the one who was digging him out.
